If I assign a book report, do you think 3 weeks is enough time to give or too short notice? I was going to assign a biography that many of them have already chosen and read from our school library.

Should I give a few more weeks? Or is it fair enough?

Three weeks doesn't sound short, especially for a book that many have already read. I think it depends on what grade you teach, what other assignments they typically have, and whether they will complete it outside of class or in class.

Woooops - just forgot I was in the "3rd grade" forum - sorry!

I would look at how long the book is? Also factor in how much time you provide to read in school. How much are you expecting for the book report? But no, three weeks should be long enough to read a book and complete a short book report as long as the students can get the books quickly.

Well, they go to library tomorrow which I asked the librarian to help tem pick out books and get ones that are appropriate for each reader. I always give them ample time to read in class if they finish an assignment early or have some down time, etc. so that's not an issue.

I found a really cute idea for a cereal box report that I'm going to have them do. It's very basic and I'm providing them with the templates for most of the box. So all they have to do is fill in the information and do a cover for the box basically.

We have an Open House at the end of the month so I want these in time for that. It'll be something good to add to the class.

So I'm going ahead with it. Thanks for your input!

Good luck! From what you've described, it sounds like they should be able to complete the project in time.

Based on the description, I think 3 weeks is enough time. My daughter is in 4th grade and if she came home with this assignment tomorrow I would not be annoyed at the length of time to complete it.

I agree, 2 weeks is too quick, 4 weeks would be too much time to allow for procrastination ;)

3 weeks is about right...we assign a historical fiction book and they have to read the book and produce a presentation (mobile) in that period of time...as long as the book is at their independent reading level, they should be fine.
