    Hi job seekers/new hires!

I have a second interview for an 8th grade sped position on Monday and I am super nervous. This job is absolutely perfect and I can't even begin to articulate how badly I want it. With that being said, can anyone tell me what I should expect or prepare for with this second interview? It's my first one, and since I've never gotten this far, I'm stressing out about what could be asked of me.

For my first interview, I met with the assistant superintendent and the curriculum and instruction director. As far as I know, this second interview is only with the principal of the school, who is new as well.

New hires and veteran teachers.....help me, please! :)

The principal will probably ask you very similar questions, may want more in depth or school specific questions.

Do a little research about the school and read the principal's note to know a little about him/her.

    Good luck!

Thanks mopar! I've done lots of research on the school, and have been practicing interview questions from the threads above. My main problems is my nerves...I just need to relax so that I can really show my personality and passion for teaching!

It should help you relax if you are meeting with only one person. I always found the interview panel types more nerve-wracking.

I think that you should speak to the following SPED requirements:

How will you communicate with the regular education teacher?
How will you facilitate the classroom learning through the sped classroom?
How do you feel about inclusion teaching?
What if you are in an inclusion setting and a nonsped child needs assistance in the classroom?
How proficient are you at writing IEPs?
How comfortable do you feel about testing students and keeping records of the progress of your sped students?
How will you handle keeping your students from failing the general education setting?
How do you feel about meeting with parents concerning their child's needs in the sped setting?
What kinds of resources will you use in teaching a child with a reading or math disability?
How involved do you plan to be with the student in his regular ed. environment?

Here are some questions we routinely ask when interviewing for a sped. position. Here is the main bit of advice that I can give.

Go in with a BIG smile. Try to be upbeat and enthusiastic. When you talk about yourself, try to be personal. DO talk about what you have learned about the school and how the mission or philosophy is a positive for you because it is aligned to your beliefs. DO try to inject humor. When asked what a weakness of yours might be... Say something like, "Interviewing for teaching positions!" Then, seriously talk about something that you are working on. Whatever you do, if you had trouble with classroom management in student teaching, do not discuss it during your interview. Sped kids often have behavioral issues and this is an area where you want to appear confident. Please make sure you KNOW your content. Talk about how your planning will reflect the needs of the learner. Talk about taking frequent formative assessments to check for understanding. Talk about communicating with reg. ed teachers every two-three weeks to see where your students are falling in the spectrum. Discuss giving the teachers tips on how to best serve the sped students in their classes. Tell the P that you plan to look at daily lesson plans from teachers to have as much cross over as possible. I could go on and on. The thing is that you want to come off as:
    *knowledgeable
    *confident
    *humorous
    *flexible
    *team player

Let the P know that you are certain that all students are capable of succeeding. It just takes some children a little longer to meet their final destination. It is your job to ensure that the student is able to make the journey with as few stops along the way as possible.

Wow SC, thank you for such a detailed response! I plan on including all of those questions to my interview questions notecards. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Update!

I went to the interview this morning and it went really well. I felt like my answers were clear and concise, and I got some head nods and smiles after answers. They told me that another full-time tutor position became available and asked me if I would be interested in that as well. I said I would, but I would rather have the 8th grade position. Either way, it's a job and I'll take it!

I went to work after my interview, and my boss (who is one of my references) said she had received a call from the school district about me. So I guess that's good? They said they would call me with their decision either tomorrow or Wednesday. Fingers crossed!

Sounds good. What kinds of questions did they end up asking?

A lot of them! First they asked me to summarize my education experience (typical question). They also asked me:
-how comfortable I am writing IEPs
-how I use technology in the classroom
-how I would handle students asking personal information about me (or wanting to "add" me on facebook)
-how I have handled talking to a parent about a difficult student
-how I would establish authority as a new/young teacher
-why I want to work for the school/why I am the best candidate
-how I adapt lessons to meet a variety of abilities

They also asked some follow up questions as well. I was really nervous at first, but then started to relax. I was actually surprised at how clear my answers were, because I tend to ramble when I'm nervous!

    Thanks everyone!

I was verbally offered the job yesterday (Tuesday). The P said that "HR would be calling me". Well, today passed with no phone call. Do you think HR could be waiting for board approval (the next meeting is Monday night)? Or if not, when should I contact the P about getting the HR stuff started? School starts in 2 weeks and I'd like to get started on my planning!

You can always ask the P for the teacher edition of the text and start your planning now.
