I've currently been teaching for 6 years (3 in 5th grade and the past 3 in 2nd grade). There's been an opening in my district for an elementary PE teacher and I have been considering doing it. I'm certified to teach PE and Health but I was wondering if anyone has ever gone from grade level teacher to PE teacher. If so, what are the pros and cons? Thanks so much in advance!

Well, I have and will always hate PE, so my response may be biased.
I would say run for the hills.
However, if you WANT to do it, then go for it!

I taught PE for 40 yrs. I also was fortunate enough to work in a school small enough that I could work inside till 10 each day. I taught computer skills, reading and math among other subjects in that time. PE was wonderful in that I was not burdened by standards and testing. I was my own boss outside. I never had a gym so the sun (Florida) was a drawback but there are SO many ways you can impact a child in PE in positive ways. The pros of teaching PE are 1. kids want to be outside 2. They love to play and have an opportunity to talk to classmates/ 3. they usually want to perform and learn things that are fun. 4. standing, jumping, running, dodging, tagging, throwing. are all better than sitting in a desk being quiet to most children. IF you challenge them, make it fun and listen to them they will basically worship and love you. The more you put into PE and make it child centered the more you will get back. I tell people my job was to go outside and play with kids each day. It was a wonderful 40 yrs.
