Does anyone have a good song to sing on the first day of second grade. I had a cute one for first, but putting the word 'second' in it, i t just doesn't work.

    Thanks.

This was the first grade song

    First Grade Chant

    A B C D E
First grade is where I want to be.
    F G H I J
Learning to read and write each day.
    K L M N O
Boys and girls I want to know.
    P Q R S T
Sharing books with you and me.
    U V W X Y
Now it's time to say goodbye.
    Z Z Z Z Z
First grade is where I want to be!

    Second grade doesn't sound right.
But maybe I could change it to "Grade 2 is where I want to be!"

The responsive classroom book (first six weeks of school) talked about singing the song "I'm gonna tell" and then using it to discuss rules. That's what I plan on doing. It will be shared reading + rules + singing! How could that be wrong?? PLus the kids are somewhat familiar with it, as we sing it during some of our school sing alongs.

How about replacing "1st Grade" with "Second's where I want to be?"

    How about
This grade is where I want to be?
When your song/chant is all done then they can all shout out,
"GRADE 2! HOW ABOUT YOU?" There will be a lot of interacting among them because they will be asking each other.

I have a chant that I used with my Pre-K's in CA.
The children loved it & some teachers too.
This is it...(I drum along on the back of my guitar.)
I LOVE TO COME TO SCHOOOL,
WHERE IT IS FUN AND COOL.
    I LEARN MY ABCs
    COUNT 0,1, 2, 3.
    Me: SOUND OF
    Children: 1, 2
    Me: SOUND OF
    Children: 3, 4
    Me: SOUND OF
    All together: 1, 2, 3, 4.
    Children: TEACH ME MORE!

Of course there will be children saying, "Teacher you forgot ZERO." I explained it to them that we can put the ZERO in and the chant will be adjusted & it takes on a different beat. It's a way of making them aware that ZERO is a number. Which brings up a subject that I got into with another Pre-K teacher before. I went into her room to help and she was doing her number chart with her class. I noticed right away that she didn't have the 0 in it. Now! I tried to be cautious about letting her know that she needed to place the zero in it. She turned around and bluntly said, "Zero means nothing! Nada!" I just calmly replied, "Dah! That is why you have to place it there. Zero is a number and when the children get to number 10, how are you going to explain that 0 in the one's place?" A month later I saw her new wall and the ZERO is up there now! It's a PITA :angel:when you see teachers avoid the 0 in their Math lessons. I've yet to see charts made by any TEACHER SUPPLY BUSINESSES with 0 in it. Someone needs to get with it and do it right. I know 0 means nothing BUT that 0 can make a BIG difference in the number line when you hit 10.
    Later,
    R1

    Okay I was thinking......

Second grade's where I want to be!

    or

This class is where I want to be!

    or

Room 4 is where I want to be!

I think Room 4 sounds the best.

Here's the one I plan to use...I modified it from a rap I saw for 1st grade:

    A, B...C, D, E,
Second grade is the place to be!

    F, G...H, I, J,
    We do our best everyday.

    K, L...M, N, O,
    Reading, Writing, watch us grow.

    P, Q...R, S, T,
    Adding numbers-one, two, three.

    U, V...W, X, Y,
It's our goal to try, try, try.

We finish with the letter Z,
School is cool*. We all agree! (*or Second grade is cool)
