Oh my word!!!! I got 2 new ones over the summer. One just turned 3 (EI kid) and the other is a 4-turning-5 parents referral. Both have autism, both are hispanic, one speaks no spanish nor english, the other parrots whatever is said and speaks very little spanish, BOTH SCREAM AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS!!!!!! OH MY EARS!!!! The 3 yr old screams because I won't let him escape from the room, roam the room, get into things no matter how we try to engage him. The 4 yr old screams because the 3 year old is screaming. The 4 year old's is worse than fingernails down a chalkboard. It is EAR PIERCING!!! I haven't hurt like this in a couple of years. My typical peers are stressing, too. 2 typicals left as soon as they got there this morning. I wanted to go with them! One was so stressed he couldn't even eat lunch and had tears rolling down his face. ANYWAY!! The 3 yr old is only coming 2 days a week (Mon & Tues). Hopefully the 4 yr old will do better tomorrow. I hope my head doesn't permanently throb like this. I should have bought stock in tylenol, advil, aleve AND excedrin! I think I took them all at various times during the day yesterday. ANYWAY!! I had to vent. I would bang my head against a wall, but it hurts enough as it is. LOL
*hugs* I hope it gets better... at least the 3-yr-old screamer won't be here today, so maybe that will calm the 4yo??? I know figuring out your motivators will be a big help... but I'm sending quiet thoughts you way.
Good luck this school year, it is definitely hard to have screamers. Anyway to isolate the 3 year old when he/she screams?
Naptime right now... It was a great day! The 4 yr old cried a little but once he got occupied he did great. Now, some of my typical peers decided they were going to cry a litte bit throughout the day but it's been a great day. I'm revamping the schedule a bit. Hopefully things will go smoother when the 3 yr old comes back on Mon.
Umm isn't the inconsistent schedule of only every Monday and Tuesday going to cause problems? I feel like some of my kids it is the first day after a 3 day weekend? Good luck!
I hope you week gets better. The first few days are the hardest, especially with new ones. I am not a teacher yet, but I am a para educator in a special needs preschool, and we had one new one who has been crying constantly and really attached to me, but today she was much better with the crying, and we are actually finding what motivates her... We also had a child we got about the end of the school year last year, who has had a tough time, but she is also getting better... I hope that things will run more smoothly on Monday!!
Turtle, we've had varied days for several students and they all got used to their days pretty quickly. I would scream bloody murder all day, too, if I was thrown in a class at three years old with no one I knew and no way to communicate with them. :/
When I was three, nobody could understand me but my mom and my dad on occasion. was like that until kindergarten or so, when I had been through two years of speech therapy. but at around three or four years old, I didn't like not being able to communicate, apparently. Black eyes were apparently rather common for the members of my house to have. I was rather violent because nobody could understand me, according to my mom.
I had a kindergartner like that last year. He was actually very sweet when he was calm but a lot of it was frustration of not being able to express himself and not being able to fully understand sometimes. I'm not sure what kind of support you have in your room, but is it possible for an aide to work one on one with him. I know with my kindergartner we found out that he was really motivated by anything hands on or anything multimedia like music, movies, the computer. Sometimes we'd just have to isolate him with as toy and take the teachable moments where we could.
I have 2 aides in the room but I also have 17 other kids in the class that also need our attention. It has been so nice yesterday and today. The tall screamer came in off the bus this morning, sat down in his chair and was ready to go with no screams at all... no tears of any kind today! It's been so nice. I have a few more new ones starting up Monday. I just hope the screamer doesn't scare them.
