Thanks leighbball, it has been really tough around here, as you know. Everyone had faith in me but me sometimes. I am still in shock a little...It'll start to sink in when I get to go into MT classroom and set it up the way I want to! =)
I wonder how many of these recent grads getting jobs so easily right out of college had any "connections" pulling strings for them. That would be useful information to many of us, I mean, there's no use getting hopeful from these posts if it turns out most of these hires had advantages many of us don't have. Do people even get hired without "knowing" someone? I'm still in college and I always hear "it's who you know", especially in the Northeast.
I graduated in May and was extended an offer at the end of June. I know not a soul on that whole side of the state let alone at the school! I definitely didn't have any connections pulling any strings to help me! In fact, the only place I did interview at where I had a connection was my alma mater and they didn't extend me an offer. ETA: I'm also in Ohio where it's said to not be easy to find a job.
I graduated at the end of April and applied to several different counties. I did not get a job in the county where I did my student teaching and where I thought I had "connections". I did get a job in a different county where no one knows me at all.
Well for a year I subbed at a school which was my internship school as well...and the principal always seen me subbing. Well one school I applied for denied me for all positions back in May,but a month later I get a call, from the school that denied me, for an interview...turns out that both principals are best friends and the pincipal refered me to her friend who is also a principal.....
SO happy that I can finally post in this thread! I sign my contract on Monday! What grade and/or subject? 2nd grade LA/SS How long have you been trying? I graduated in May and have been looking since May How many resumes did you send out? well over a hundred How many interviews or job fairs? 1 job fair 2 interviews What general geographic area? North Texas
In the district I'm moving to, I didn't have any connections. The P just happened to have an opening created TWO DAYS before we met at a job fair. The P loved what I was saying and I was hired. I will admit I knew very little about the district. (I didn't know they were going to be present at the Fair!) I was so embarrassed, but the P did not seem surprised.
Well...I have been trying for over two years. Currently I live in the NE, just outside of Pittsburgh. I subbed for a year and was offered two LTS jobs by my principal. For the most part, it is who you know (seven elementary positions hired last year, four were relatives of teachers in the district). However, you can get hired if you pay your dues (subbing, long term subbing), but this can take years. My husband is being relocated to Florida. I went down in June for an interview event and was offered a job on the spot. If you want a job quickly after college, you will most likely need to relocate. It is tough getting hired in certain areas of the northeast.
I don't live in the Northeast. But I just graduated in May and I got a job. And we just recently moved to a new area, where I knew NO ONE. I had no connections. It's not always who you know, but how you sell yourself! Don't give up!
I can say that I did have some connections in getting a job. I'll be teaching at the school where I graduted. I also student taught in the county this past Spring, and I knew many teachers and staff. My mentor teachers rallied for me to get a job, as well as other teachers I didn't student teach with. They sent recommendations for me. My mother also used to work in the county as a school nurse, and she knows a woman in HR because they are in some club together. My step dad's boss even talked me up to some people he knew on the board. I will honestly admit that I had A LOT of people pulling for me. I know so many people struggle for teaching jobs, as I had applied to SOOOO many counties in my state and others. It will happen eventually. If I hadn't got this job, I figured it would take a year or so to get one because no one was even giving me an interview.
My connections have helped me land interviews, but it was up to me to get the job. I've found that's often the case.
This is true. Connections helped me, but that isn't why I got the job. I know this because I interviewed with the county before and they hired someone else instead of me. I was told I was in the top 2, but they gave it to someone else. Luckily for me, a teacher announced that she was retiring, and here I am. Anywho, What grade and/or subject? 8th grade English How long have you been trying? Since May (I just graduated) How many resumes did you send out? I don't know the exact number, but A LOT. In every county in MD, VA, DE. How many interviews or job fairs? 2 interviews, 1 job fair. What general geographic area? Eastern Shore, Maryland

I have been waiting for over a year to do this!!! What grade and/or subject? media center specialist How long have you been trying? 1 year, 2 months, 8 days and 2 hours How many resumes did you send out? too many to count How many interviews or job fairs? too many to count What general geographic area? Georgia
Another question about the question posed about recent graduates getting hired due to connections. Are any of you recent hires a bit older and also changing career careers? I am mid-way through my post-bac program for special ed certification. I've interviewed now for three parapro positions. Did not get the first two and had the third today and will hear something by Monday or Tuesday hopefully. My question: I'm 47 and a career changer. I wonder if that helps or hurts my chances? Just curious what others who are a bit older like me think? I know it's not a black and white question or answer. I just wish I didn't have my under eye circles! Why oh why do I get scheduled for the earlier interviews!
I'm only 21 and again no connections. Sorry! I know a guy who is older (late 30s, early 40s) who hasn't had any luck but he's elementary and can only look locally because his wife's job is so great.
Long story here: after relocating for my first teaching job, I was laid off at the end of a long and arduous school year. I moved back to my original location unsure of my future. I must say that though my search was not as long as others, it definitely was not easy. I do feel fortunate to have landed a position at a great school with amazing staff and kids. One of the interviews I had was through connections, but didn't result in a job. This job, I got because someone I barely recall meeting recommended me for an interview. What grade and/or subject? High School English How long have you been trying? 3 months How many resumes did you send out? About 50 How many interviews or job fairs? 3 interviews What general geographic area? Illinois
