YAY!! Who's next??
I just got hired as an Elementary Special Education Teacher!! I have been working as a para the past couple of years while looking for a teaching job. I am so happy it is in the same school district.
CA, sped English 9-12 I am so excited about being on this list. It is a dream come true. I'm in my district of choice and at an innovative school that has high expectations of the students. I want to thank all the members who've posted their cover letters, resumes, teaching philosophies, and interview tips. All of them helped me immensely. I'd like to give a few tips: Every interview that doesn't lead to a job truly does give you stronger interview skills. I did a self-evaluation after each interview so I could improve target areas. This got me to the place where I was no longer fighting my nerves and able to professionally present a vision for my students. If you get to present a lesson, choose one that is simple and well structured. Use material the students can easily master. Ask the students questions to determine their background knowledge so you know what actually needs to be taught. Include a systematic activity. Walk around the classroom and interact with the students. Don't completely ignore your observer. Introduce them to the class and allow the students to present their work to them and you.
Congrats...I also want to add to your tips that you gave. I went on tons of interviews this summer, at least 13 different districts and I had multiple interviews in each district...each time getting so close and then round after round I just didn't quite make it. I ended up getting hired in a position 2 weeks after school started (well the interview process started before school but I had to do a demo after the first interview, then interview with the super, so it took time).. My advice is similar. If you can remember, write down what you were asked the second you step into your car. This will help you practice before your next interview. Use your free time (the time you aren't interviewing or working elsewhere) to research your field. I teach reading, so any reading practices I am not familiar with, I learn about. Finally, be enthusiastic. After getting hired, one of the people who watched me do my demo mentioned this. She said she knows a lot of new teachers/people interviewing who have a sense of entitlement. They feel they are owed a job and often just go in and do their demo without really being excited. I think a combination of knowing my field, having had several interviews and practicing, and my enthusiasm landed me my job.

California teaching jobs? Does anyone have any inside info on teaching jobs that may be coming available in southern California? I feel like I am living through a teacher's worst nightmare. I taught English --mostly ELD to English Learners-- as a new teacher for four years at an inner city school. There were many problems in the school and district but I came to love my students and was able to help them raise test scores each year. Biggest problem was: my contracts all four years were temporary (political stuff/creative bookkeeping) so when cuts needed to be made at the end of 09-10 I was the first to go. I landed a job right away in another district through a connection I had there. I accepted the job in early July and school began early August. WHAT A NIGHTMARE!! The school I was hired to teach in is among the lowest scoring 5% in the state. I hadn't been worried because my previous school had been low scoring as well. There was no discipline, no support for discipline, no curriculum materials, filthy classroom with no help from custodians, new principal who continually blamed me for every problem that came up. This school has lost 25-30 teachers in the last two years, either voluntarily or unvoluntarily and some of the teachers and aides there told me they thought I was crazy for going to work there (AFTER I was hired). I was hired to teach a reading intervention class that coincidentally held the biggest discipline problems in the school. These kids were downright dangerous--and I was NEVER allowed to refer any of them out of the classroom. After three weeks in the classroom and a two-week medical leave ordered by my doctor (no physical ailment yet but I was just a wreck--coming home in tears every night, couldn't teach anything in the class--just a joke. I didn't know where else to turn so my husband suggested I talk to my doctor who has known me for many years. He couldn't believe my situation and told me to stay home and see what it was like for them to find someone to take over. That's a whole other story . . . ) I finally decided I needed to get out of there before I got sick or gave up on teaching altogether. Only problem is, that was September 8 and by then most jobs had been filled. I have been on three interviews since then--I was told I was one of 150-155 applicants for each position-- and I got the interviews!! So I have a great resume but I was not offered any of the jobs. I do have a great resume and I believe I was on my way to becoming a pretty good teacher. However, I came to teaching late in my life--I am currently 58 years old with four years of experience-- and I am feeling like once they see that I am older it doesn't matter what my resume says or what my experience has been, that they probably go with a teacher that is younger. I thought my experience with English Learners would be an advantage, but maybe those positions have been cut--I don't know. I am going NUTS sitting at home knowing how bad the job prospects are for teaching. Any suggestions anyone could make would mean a lot to me right now . . . I am very discouraged. :help:
FINALLY!!!!! I get to add my name to this list! I've been trying for 4 years since I resigned from my last teaching position. Too many resumes and apps to count!! I've probably been on around 20 interviews in that 4 year period. I'm in the Lone Star state. And of course, I'll be teaching High School special ed.
