How long have you been trying?
How many resumes did you send out?
How many interviews or job fairs?
    What general geographic area?
And of course what grade and/or subject?

Hello All! I have a job! Yippeee!

I have been trying for around 2 months. But I have been preparing since around January.

I sent out about 10 resumes - maybe more.

I went on about 5 interviews and was assured at the interviews that I would have a position, which is AMAZING because I understand the job market in the Dallas area is not so great. And I was told by the HR of several districts that while they say there are no jobs to many, there will be jobs absolutely. I accepted a job in a great district outside of Dallas.

I will be teaching 3rd grade and I am working on finishing up my Texas certification. Currently I only have a SC teaching certificate. But I have a lot of experience and I have had wonderful professional training experiences that have helped when looking for a teaching position.

I am an Early Childhood Teacher and will be teaching Grade 3.

Did I say... Yippppeeee?????? I was so afraid that I would not be able to find a position and I got a position on one of the two days that I went to Dallas to interview. I was also told by another district HR that I would have a job in her district. The people I met interviewing were all so helpful and it was such a fun experience. My best advice is to go in with a positive attitude and showcase your talents.

So don't give up! Jobs are out there. Be persistent! Don't rely on just filling out applications online. You must make some personal connections. Best of luck to all!

    Columbus Jobs

    CatnFiddle~
I have been applying for just about every job in Ohio, not just Columbus. I even moved to NC for 2 years for the experience (still applied for jobs in Ohio while there). Moved back to Columbus, working on my Masters and still searching for a teaching job. I tutored 2nd and 3rd graders in Reading this year for Columbus City Schools. Just hoping for an elementary school teaching job for 09-10school year! Its tough!

I agree to the nth degree, which is why I promise to keep my eyes open for anything that might be your territory (I'm a high school teacher and applaud anyone with the attention span to handle elementary school).

    dizzybri and catnfiddle,

I taught in Cbus this year, but I am moving to New Mexico in 2 weeks. I believe that CCS is on a hiring freeze and has been for several years. I have heard that Southwest district is a bit easier to get into...

After two years of applying and interviewing, and then doing it all over again this year, I got a job! I'll be teaching 1st grade in the school district I grew up in. So excited, but also very nervous for this 1st "official" year of teaching!

Congrats taryn_liz! Being a first year is such an exciting time. Meet with your new team as soon as you are able. They will guide you through the process of becoming a great teacher. Luckily teachers are all basically nice people and more than willing to help in most cases. I wish you well.

Columbus (according to what they told us at the Job Fair 2009) is hiring between 200-300 teachers this year. Southwestern's levy didn't pass so they are supposed to be laying off atleast 100 teachers...

Do you have a 4th and 5th grade endorsement? Are you certified out of state or in state (question is posed to anyone in Columbus =)

To be honest, there was no way I could get a job pk-3 here. INSANE. I wholeheartedly agree with the difficulty of getting a job around here.

I'm mostly a lurker here, but I thought I'd share some good news in this thread. My wife and I went to the SC Teacher Expo yesterday and both walked away with offers in the same district. Mine is to teach HS Physics, and hers is for HS Biology.

Just checked last year's thread. We were at 50 jobs on this exact day last year. We're at almost half of where we were last year, which is good considering about a month ago we were at about a third of where we were at at that particular time last year.
