Hi!!! I recently was hired to be a 7th grade LA teacher. I previously taught 1st grade and had a block placement in 4th grade during undergrad. I have never taught anything higher than 4th so needless to say, I am pretty nervous. If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would greatly appreciate it. I am looking for ideas on what to do during the first few days. I know the first three days will be chaotic with assemblies, early dismissal, etc. but I want the time I have with the students to be productive. Thank you in advance. I look forward to reading all the suggestions.

Maybe give them a survey to see what they like to read. I imagine you'll need to dramatically adjust your classroom library!

A reading survey would be great. I have a seating challenge that I do every day the first week. It doesn't take long, but the kids have to work cooperatively to meet the challenge. Plan on taking them to the library right away so they can have a book with them. Quickwrites would be helpful too.
