Hi all, I have now 6 years experience teaching the primary grades and am now being asked to go to 4th. I don't want to "baby" them but I'm not sure what 4th grade looks like.... also I have started to move more and more away from bunches of worksheets but is that something that's inherent for 4th grade?

You do not have to use worksheets in 4th grade. You really can make the lessons more hands on and provide time to write.

What about working directly from language arts/vocabulary books?

You can but again unless it is required by your school, you do not have to. Many fourth grade students respond well to readers' workshop, literature circles, or even guided reading.

I agree with mopar that in 4th grade you can be very creative with your lessons....which is true for any grade. Building Academic Vocabulary by Robert Marzano has some really good vocab activities that would be great for the upper grades. I love that book and not a single worksheet in it.

Have some worksheets ready for subs and those busy days, but stay with your aim of real learning activities for your students.
