When I taught third grade I read books by Kevin Henkes. There are several books that can be tied in with following rules and being kind to others.

Yes! This one has got to be a book you purchase and keep on your shelf!

I also use , The Shape of Me and Other Stuff by Dr. Suess. Then we decorate puzzle people to hang on wall.

I'm going to read If You Take a Mouse to School, then take our class mascot (a bee) on a tour of the school, take pictures, then make a class book later in the week.

Miss Nelson is Missing, I make T chart use it to discuss students behavior in the story and students own behavior.

Some ideas are David Goes to School, Froggie goes to school, Miss Nelson is Missing, Get Up and Go.

I personally like Hooway for Wodney Wat (great for showing it's okay to be different and treat each other with respect. Kids love this one!!!!)

I teach 4th grade....I'm not a lot of help, (A friend of mine in 2nd grade always read a book called Lily and the Purple Plastic Purse, or something like that) but I want to ask you all a question....Has anyone ever read a book from Scholastic called The Top Ten Ways to Ruin the First Day of School? I bought it last year and tucked it away at school, thinking that by the title it might be a good first day book for my kids. We can't get into our classrooms yet, so I am unable to retrieve my book and read it. Just wondering if anyone could give me an idea about it!!

I also use Leo the Late Bloomer to show that it's ok to be different and that everyone doesn't learn to do things at the same pace.

I also have a book by the First Day Jitters person called First Year Letters. I am going to use it to teach letter writing before we start with our pen pal exchange.

i do i feel silly then we talk about the different emotions we have...like last night, when they were getting ready for school this morning, right now and then how they are feeling about first grade.
i just love this book...so fun and it loosens up the kids.

    First Day Book

I teach first grade. I always start my year with The Little Engine that Could . This shows them that all they have to do is try and they will succeed.

A lot of the posts here are books for younger grades. Anyone have an ideas for 4th graders?? I thought I could use a book I bought from scholastic last year, but I went to my classroom to get it and it's a chapter book. (The Top Ten Ways to Ruin the First Day of School-It's about a kid who wants to be on David Letterman....will my students know who he is and what a top ten list is???) I'd really like a shorter book that I can do an activity with. Any suggestions are appreciated!
