Thirty five years ago this summer I earned my BS, got married a week later and then within 3 months began teaching in the county I still work in. It is amazing how many changes have impacted teaching. Mostly paper work. Salaries are still low (at least in my location). Chalk boards, OH projectors and old 16mm movie projectors have given way to white boards, smart boards and computers. Encyclopedias have surrendered to Google. But kids are still kids to me. Especially in the elementary. I still see enthusiasm and the desire to excel. I occasionally encounter the kid at that age already beat down by life and home but I make him/her my project to bring back to the fun of childhood even if it is just 30 minutes a day.
So after a good wkout before 530am and reading the paper with cereal I will put on my whistle and go out to play for the 36th year. The only better job I can imagine is being Rick Steves traveling partner.

35 years ago this summer myself and mrs blazer got married. Still together and just celebrated our coral wedding anniversary. Grease was the must see movie that year IIRC.

Umm...if you started in the 1978/1979 school year, this is the start of your 36th year of teaching, right?

I didn't say getting older made me better at math. I am pretty sure you are right. Thank you for that correction. :dizzy:

You are an asset to your school, just as you are here.

Thank you CF. The first day was like a sauna out there. In fact my other school (where I am today) didn't go out because of the "heat index". It was just a hot day in Fla with high humidity. The two weeks in Aug. we do now can be H O T. One year we started the first week in Aug. It was nasty. We do not have gyms in Fla for Elem. schools.

If you graduated HS in 1974, you and I are the same age. I didn't start teaching right away, so this will be my 31st year. Remember the mimeograph machines (I think that's what you call them) where you turned the crank and out came purple copies?! :) Have a great year!

My first year after graduation (in 73)I worked construction and actually made enough (saved) to pay my tuition for four years of college. Amazing to think about considering the cost of college now. I remember those mimeograph machines well. My first year (teaching MS math) we would line up to use them. I loved the smell of the freshly made copies.
