I'm trying. My son's school district called me today to see if I'd like to interview for a one on one shadow aide for a middle school student. Anyone have any info on something like that??
I was a one on one aide for three years. I found that schools don't see it as teaching experience. Aides pay stinks! If you can afford to be an aide go for it. The first year I was a one on one with a high school student. I went to his classes with him. Support him in his work if he needed help or didn't understand. The next two yrs I worked with kindergarten students.
Hi! I THINK a shadow aide is one who stays with the student all day, but kind of stays back and helps when needed. Kind of watches and observes and jumps in when needed. I am not totally sure. Different schools can use different titles. I know I had an interview once and they called it a 1:1 aide and I would have had to ride the bus in the morning and afternoon and be with the boy all day, but it was hands on all the time because he needed constant supervision. I think you should check it out!!!!
Jaime, I know the aide pay can stink. I actually made 13 an hour but had no benes or anything. Paid for what I worked. My friend made 11 and had full benes. I had to sign a 60 day contract, she did not. Based on what I have seen here, aide pay ranges from 7-14 an hour, usually more for older students.
I forgot to mention that I had to ride the bus before and after school. A good one on one isn't always in the student's face. They let the student try on his until he needs help than jump in for the extra support.
I know-never get in their faces. I knew someone who did that and it annoyed the kids so much. No wonder. Boundaries are good! The interview I had was for a kid who bit and kicked and would freak out spontaneously so you had to watch him like a hawk. I always told my students that if they needed me, I was there. They liked that I didnt smother them. I wouldnt like it done to me!
Try to find out as much information as possible about the child you will be working with. Go and speak with the instructor in that classroom and spend alot of time in the classroom working with the child before taking the job with the child.
You may also want to go in another day just to stop by and view the classroom for a little while. This may give you a more objective view, because maybe the child had a good or bad day the day of the interview.
Here you are not allowed to meet the child you will be working with until you have signed a contract.

No, there aren't that many jobs. However, I send to every superintendent, assistant superintendent, and elementary school principal in practically any district in Suffolk and Nassau county. So that adds up to a LOT of resumes. People tell me that it is overkill to send to the principals but every interview call I have ever gotten has come from a principal, so I'm sticking to it. Oh yes I do all of the online applications too. I do both, figuring it just doubles my chance of SOMEBODY reading it! I get the postcards and disregard them. What frustrates me is when I get called for an interview from a district that "doesn't accept" the paper ones, but I show up for the interview and they have my resume, on my expensive resume paper, all laid out on the desk in front of them. Don't accept them, huh? I wish that New York would get its act together and just ban paper resumes altogether. It's too much of a game. I love the idea of the OLAS system, but it would be so much more efficient if that was the ONLY way to apply to a job and all of the districts went through the applications on there. I would be more than happy to click on 100 districts on Long Island to apply to than sit here and do all the resumes. When I rule the world....
Last year I loved the fact that so many did take paper resumes. I figured it gave me the edge over those people who just clicked on all those districts. It was more work my way, but worth the effort.
Wow, here in the Antelope Valley (1 hour north of Los Angeles) there are only 3 elementary districts. I plan on sending out 3 packets. I will wait until there is an actual opening posted though. I have a job in the meantime, so I will keep it until I am hired somewhere else.
How many schools are in each district? Here in NJ, you can have a district with only K-8 and only two small schools...

It was for a TA job. I am not looking anymore. I have had it. I don't have the desire to even do this anymore.
Oh no Sorry to hear that. I know how frustrating it can be, believe me. I take it the meeting didn't go well.
:sorry: I'm so sorry MissFrizzle. It is rough looking for a job. I haven't even gotten one phone call. I have people telling me left and right that I am an excellent teacher and that I will have no problem getting a job, but they do not realize how much competition there is out there. Since, I don't know anyone in the school districts that can put in a good word for me, I pretty well look at getting a teaching job like winning the lottery -- it is all chance.
Oh, Miss Frizz - I am so sorry to hear that you are done with the search. I know how frustrating it is - I have sent out so many resumes/applications and have not gotten a phone call for any teaching positions! Maybe you'll feel a little different in a few days?!?! I really hate to think that you are not going to be a teacher What is the matter with these schools?!!?
I did my demo lesson and everything seemed to go well. After the lesson, the principal brought me back to her office and told me what she liked about it. She then told me that a permanent position just opened up in the grade I was interviewed for bc the teacher is relocating. It sounded promising to me. She also said she was going to check my references and that she needed an administrator. This is where my concern is. See "pink slip" thread. The principal's last day is June 30, and I'm not sure what kind of reference she would give me. Obviously I'm not one of her favorite people bc I wasn't offered a job there even though I was a LTS all year in 2 positions. When I asked about a possible position for next year, she brushed me off but did say I could use her as a reference. I'm worried that she may ruin or at least hinder my chances of getting the permanent positon. The principal of the school I interviewed at said I would hear back by last night or today. It's noon and I haven't gotten a call.
I don't think its too soon. I'm sure she understands how anxious you are to know. I hope you get good news asap.
