I'm going through the Geometry files given to me by a friend and I just came across this. I take no credit for it-- credit goes to Denise, Caitlin, Natalie, Liz, or someone else. The Ten Commandments of Math 1. Thou shalt not divide by zero. 2. Thou shalt not put other textbooks before thee in math class. 3. Thou shalt show thy work; check thy work and confirm that thy results are reasonable. 4. Remember thy test days and prepare for them wholly. 5. Thou shalt honor the correct order of operations. 6. Thou shalt not do thy math homework in ink ! 7. Thou shalt commit the facts of arithmetic to memory. 8. Thou shalt do unto one side of an equation what thou doest to the other 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy original problems; thou shalt copy thy problems accurately and legibly. 10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's paper, not anything that is thy neighbor's
I hate #6 - because I HATE pencil and really don't like it when they use it in English. lol. Just like I make them hide all their work on their final drafts, and you make them show it!
Cute...I would love to do this for Language Arts too... Thou shalt always make I a capital when it stands alone...
No #2 pencils are not a lefty's best friend! Actually, I have found it beneficial to never erase my math mistakes, but to instead circle them so I can track them and figure out where my problems lie. When I am just practicing (before I do work to submit), I just use a whiteboard.
My dad would appreciate #8 - whenever he helped me with my homework, he would say, "Whatever you do on one side, you do on the other!"
These are great! Should be copied by every student the first day of class and kept in their notebook. Then the rest of the year, attention can be directed to their reproduction when they have committed one of the sins.
Two things: 1 Writer's Block: If you come up with Language commandments, please share! 2 I cannot wait to share these with the math teacher at our school!
Any offense taken? Just wondering if you ever had a problem with a parent/administrator for posting this since it's technically bible-related? We did a play once and a parent confronted me for assigning a little girl the part of a snake...they were Jehovah's witness. I would love to do commandments for math or grammar but wondering if someone will get offended...?
I'm an atheist and I see nothing wrong with the title of the list. That said there is always someone that will get offended.
I like the Letterman top 10, there is always a chance of someone being offended. Just adjust the language a bit and it should be fine.
I love this!!!! I want to write a Lang. one now. I also think that it is so sad that we live in a world where we have to consider whether or not to change the verbage. God created us and loves us and maybe this would be a great way to help a student or a parent think about that.
I agree but I'd hate to make a BB and be told I have to take it down because it's borderline religious!
Subject and Verb shall always be in agreement. Thou shalt use alternatives to the word "said". BTW, I love the math commandments.
I'm a lefty and I have more trouble with pens that pencils, there's the smear factor. I think it depends on the angle at which you hold you hand.
Not trying to cause a fight or hurt feelings, but we do live in a country where people have a right to believe (or not believe) what they want. Just to see the other side of the issue - would you want your child in a classroom that displayed (directly or indirectly) references to the Koran or the Talmud?
