Using a document camera during instruction

In my room I have a document camera that projects on to a screen. We use it all the time. Most of the time I use it for modeling activities, showing video clips, using the internet, and during instruction. Sometimes I use it to go over morning work, to practice together a couple math problems in the workbook, etc.

Last year it hung over the white board, so kids were at their seats when I used it. When the kids are supposed to be doing something, like repeating each step, or going over their work, I liked it. But when kids just were sitting at their tables they get sooo fidgety. It's also inconvienient because I start a lesson on the carpet, then need to use the screen, so they have to go to their seats, and then sometimes come back to the carpet. We are losing time with the transition.

It would be so nice if the screen was hung by our carpet, since most of my instruction is on the carpet. However, those times when we are doing science experiments, using math manipulatives, going over work, etc. at our tables, it's necessary having the doc camera there.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if there is a certain position you put your overhead/doc camera/whatever you may use.

I would love to see if the custodian could mount it in a spot where it is visable from the carpet and the tables. But I can't figure out where that would be with the arrangement of my room.

Many teachers in my building just project it on a wall or whiteboard...some don't even have screens! We showed a movie the last day of school while students ate their lunch in the gym...we projected it on the back wall and it was like being at a drive in...the picture was huge! The children loved it!!! You don't HAVE to use a screen!

True, but then I'd need to make sure I save the wall space for it..

The last day of school we watched a Magic School Bus ocean video projected really big on the wall. They all laid out on their beach blankets eating their snacks for our "beach party." It was the cutest thing ever!

I project mine on the whiteboard. My gripe is that the picture looks best when the lights are off, so it's hard for kids to see what they are writing.

I have an LCD projector in my room. I used the screen when I had the blackboard, but since I have a whiteboard this year I plan to just use that. My kids watched a slideshow I made. They had a great time!

Borrowing Jennifoo's picture...

I'm kind of thinking about putting my carpet like this, in beween the tables and the board. So the kids can see the projector from their seats, or the carpet.

But the thing is, I have a HUGE big calendar wall. I won't have space for it iwth this layout.

Arrrrgh still don't know what to do.

Two things:

1. I LOVE, and I mean LOVE your room!!! Very clean and organized. Very interesting desks, too.

2. I am confused about whether you need a new location for the document camera/projector or a new location for the screen. I have a few ideas but I was just wondering if you could clarify what you need.

I wish I had some kind of system to mount a screen and my LCD projector too.

Why don't you hang a big piece of butcher paper that you could roll up. Last year I had an 8 ft screen, HUGE, and this year I have changed schools and it is not nearly as large. The butcher paper can be secured to the wall at the top with hot glue and then rolled up carefully and secured with binding clips and then let loos when ever you need it. You could do the same with a sheet.
