Can ear problems be the cause of the violent behavior?

The violent child in my class is getting tubes put back into his ears. The parents said his behavior would always get bad when his ears were bugging him. What do you feel about this?

See if things improve!! I've had HORRIFIC earaches/ear infections- it feels as if your head is going to split open. Ear problems can throw off your equilibrium as well. If this student has been walking around feeling unbalanced, in pain, 'clogged up feeling', not hearing well...Yes, his behavior could definitely be affected.

It may be true. I have a friend who's daughter had them put in, and it made a world of difference with her behavior.

I guess if his ears are bothering him it would make him irritable. Let's hope the tubes help!

I don't think it would be cause for violent behavior, but it could be cause for a child not being able to learn to his/her ability. Meaning, it could cause hearing problems. I'm not really sure what I would think of that. Is this the same child you have been talking about? If so, I don't think it could be the sole reason why, but it could play a part in it. The child you have been referring to has more than just ear issues. I do think though that it could "aid" in having that kind of temperament.

I don't know if that made sense. In a nutshell, I do think that it could have an affect on him, but I don't think that it would be the only factor in his behavior.

JenPooh Yes this is the same child I have been talking about.

I too feel that there are other issues as well with this child we shall see. He won't be back until Tues. He has been sick yesterday and today and then Monday he gets his tubes put in.
It has been so nice not having to deal with his behaviors.

They tell me that it will take a week before the tubes have any effect and 6 weeks for the ears to get to the end results. We just had a fourth grader, who had tubes and they found out the tubes had fallen out or whatever. And she got new ones put in and the second week her right ear was not good. She was in pain. Sure enough the gel had not bonded properly and they went back in to try and fix it again. I am anxious what happens to your little guy.

Same kid? Then that's not the only reason he's been acting up. Besides, if his parents thought it was his ears that were causing his violence, what took them so long to do something about it?!

Hey I am rather disagreeable right now. No one wants to be around me. I am so grumpy not violent (but I am an adult lol). I had my wisdom teeth out Friday. And I am so irritable. I can't even imagine having an ear ache for four or five months with out it getting better. So yes that could probably lead to violent behavior in a three yr old.

I've known of a child that was violent and come to find out, HE WAS DEAF and the parent had no clue. He was frustrated as all get out because his needs could not be met... language delays, he couldn't communicate his needs. Once they figured THAT out and he learned sign language and they did, too, he was a totally different child.
