Do you teach two sessions (AM and PM), have other responsibilities (assessments, pull-out groups or helping another teacher), or do you have half the day for prep? Just curious what it is like in your district/state.
At our school, right now some of us have responsibilities part of the year (myself and another K teacher are doing EL assessments for the whole school) Last year we did pull out groups for EL's but for only about half the year...the first half of the year we had that time for prep. Some schools in our district require that the AM teacher helps the PM teacher w/ reading groups, and vice versa.
Our school is looking at going to some full day K classes but I don't think it will happen very soon.
Here the teachers that do teach half day k, either teach two sessions or are only employed half time.
In the school I work at now there are three kindergarten teachers. One teaches am and pm, one teaches only am and the other teaches Monday two sessions, the AM sessions comes all day Tuesday and Thursday, and Pm session comes all day Wed, and Friday.
I teach 2 sessions (a.m. and p.m.) but I'm also in charge of testing all my 50 students and giving them DRAs and we don't get any sub help. So to test them all, I just do an entire week of centers. It's tough but I get the job done.
At my previous practicum placement school, they had a half day session in the morning and the afternoon. It was an open-concept classroom, and we were running two JK/SK classes in the morning, and one JK/SK class in the afternoon. So, one teacher was a full-time teacher, and another who only teaches in the morning was a part-time. A full-time teacher who carries both morning and afternoon sessions basically did the same materials for the morning and the afternoon.
The school (private) I am working at right now as a supply/assistant teacher is providing a full-day JK/SK kindergarten program.
