3rd Grade Vocabulary

I'm looking for a list of "essential" 3rd grade vocabulary words--ones all students should know by the end of the year. However, when I search I keep finding lists of academic/test words, but not general vocab. Anyone have one or an idea of where to look?

Have you tried looking up Sitton spelling words? While I can't stand the program, the words aren't bad. The list consists of more words like "happen, how, because" etc.

I'd love a list, not from a book. I wonder if there's one out there...

Okay, I shouldn't have been overconfident. Apparently the list isn't available anymore without purchasing or something. Very recently, everything was free! :-/

Look here- only the first nine weeks are free- http://www.tampareads.com/

Wordly Wise (www.wordlywise3000.com) is a very good vocabulary program. I am not sure if this is what you wanted but I used it in my third through fifth mulitage classroom the last three years. I will contine to use it in fourth this year. I love it!

You can call and get a sample of a few grade levels and it will have the words all listed in the back covers.

I'm a little confused about the terminology of vocabulary...several people are recommending spelling lists for your vocabulary question. Sitton is a list of the most frequently used words in reading and writing in the english language. That is why they are numbered. In our district 1st grade is required to read and write #1-100, 2nd #101-200, 3rd#201-300, etc. These 100 words are called our no excuse words. They must know how to read and write correctly. (In writing if they consistently misspell no excuse words they cannot score proficient.)

As for vocabulary...we use the Elements for Reading program. I LOVE IT! I have found it used on Ebay before this is why i am suggesting to you as well. It is great at teaching kids 2nd and 3rd tier words that are highly used in literature. They give photos for each vocabulary word and there is a teachers guide that helps give ideas on how to teach these words. Then I use the words we have been introduced to as our Word Wizard Words. The class gets a marble or block (whichever we are collecting) each time the appropriately use the word in a sentence or recognize it in a piece of literature. I really helps the vocabulary become a part of their daily language.
