Pi Day Celebrations (Math)

Anyone celebrating Pi Day this year? I am wondering if you will share your best ideas.

Right now, my only idea is to read the "Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi" book. I teach special ed. algebra and I think the kids will love it. I was thinking about doing pi bracelets but I am not sure if the kids will "get" it. Also thinking about decorating t-shirts and having kids make or bring in pies from home. We have a lot of parent participation at school and they will send in money for projects so....bring on the ideas!

When I was in high school in algebra I, the teacher had an art project with all her students. We had to do some sort of visible art presentation of pi - like a sculpture, painting, drawing, etc. We could start the project the night before then finish it in class that day or just do it while in class. After we were done, she would display every student's Pi art around the room for the next week.

Have the student bake pies, measure the circumference of them, and then eat them...everyone wins, the students learn and everyone gets pie!

BTW, today is squareroot day!

Have students measure various kinds of circular objects for the circumference and the diameter.

I have also had students make a pi paper chain to go around the outside of school. Similar to a Pi bracelet, but with paper.

We have written PI poems. Each line of the poem had the number of words for a digit of PI. The poem can be about anything you want.

Have a competition to see who can memorize the most digits of PI.

PI songs are fun to sing as well.
