Capitalize West Coast?

Hi- This is a silly question, but my daughter is home sick today and her homework asks- Do you capitalize west coast in the sentence: The Atlantic Ocean is on the western coast and the Indian Ocean is on the eastern coast. I am having a brain fart & do not know the answer! I even tried word with spell check and it won't pick up either. Thanks

I believe you capitalize West Coast when it's in reference to the specific locations in the US.

e.g. I live on the West Coast.

When you're just describing the coast as being on the eastern or western side of a country, you don't capitalize it.

e.g. I'm traveling to the western coast of Australia.

At least, that's what I would do. I'm sure others will correct me if I'm mistaken.

That's how I'd handle it, yes: "the West Coast" functions as a proper name, whereas "the west coast" is a descriptor.
