Second grade author study

I have to do an Author Study presentation on one of those boards they use for science experiments. The first two authors I thought of that I could really use in the classroom were Arnold Lobel and Kevin Henkes. But I can't use those author's because I already used them for other assignments in class.

What are some authors kids go crazy for in beginning second grade/end of first (I'm going to second next year)?

I was thinking Laura Numeroff, but maybe that's too babyish for second grade. I was also thinking Chris Van Allsburg, Tomie DePoala, Leo Lionni,

I was going to suggest Christ Van Allsburg and Tommie dePaola. If you wanted to integrate art, you could do Eric Carle.

I'm excited because next year I want to do author studies with the kids I get (IF I have 2nd- which is super likely.)

I'm thinking I will do Tomie DePaola first, then, while it might be babyish- we will do Maurice Sendak (is this too young?) and perform the play "Really Rosie" and learn all of the Carol King Songs!!! I am hoping Sendak is not to babyish for 2nd graders.

I can't believe I'm thinking next year already!

Hm I don't think Sendak is too babyish, then again I don't know a lot of his books. I do know Chicken Soup With Rice... that was my FAVORITE book as a kid! And I bought the big book from Scholastic! Love it!

Wow! Thanks!

Just wondering, how do you go about doing author studies in your classroom? How do you integrate it with everything else you need to do in your reading time?

I incorporate it in my Reader's Workshop mini-lesson. I like to use that author's books to help teach the concept we are working on at that time. When I can get Guided Reading books by that author it makes the study even more interesting.
