Modified Block Schedule

I teach at a high school which is in its first year operating under a Modified Block Schedule. Basically, that means some subjects are taught in a block setting, every day for 84 mins either from Sept-Jan or Jan-June (English, Science, most Maths.)

Yet, other classes follow a traditional schedule, 40 minutes a day, all year (Geometry, Electives, Gym, History).

Even then, there are certain courses that can run in a block setting for just one quarter, a traditional setting for just two quarters, and so on. It's enough to make your head spin!

So in a given day, a student/teacher will have some classes in block setting, some classes in a traditional setting all year, some quarter blocks, and some two-quarter tranditionals. Whew!

I'm wondering if there are other teachers out there teaching successfully with this type of schedule? I'm getting used to it, and I think it's faciliating our students' learning. However, I'm just curious of others' opinions.

I've never taught in this setting, but went to a HS that had this type of scheduling. It was okay.

Our high school is et up like a college scheduling. Students take four courses per quarter. Each course meets every school day for that quarter. Some courses last for 1/4 terms. others 2/4, others, 3/4 and AP/SPED math classes last for 4/4 terms. For example a students schedule would look like this for a 10th grader.

Quarter 1 (Each class will meet everyday of the quarter):
Block 1: English 10
Block 2: Geometry
Block 3: Biology
BLock 4: Unites States History

Quarter 2:
Block 1: Public Speaking
Block 2: Geometry
Block 3: Biology
Block 4: United States History

Quarter 3:
Block 1: English 10
Block 2: One quarter elective like Foods and Nutrition 1
Block 3: Spanish 3
Block 4: Computer Applications I (2 quarter elective)

Quarter 4:
Block 1: English 10
Block 2: Geometry
Block 3: Spanish 3
Block 4: Computer Applications I
