Classroom board games

Hello, I am going to be teaching 7th gr language arts next year. Does anyone know of any grammar or spelling board games I could buy for use during groups or centers? I subbed for a reading teacher who had tons of games to teach reading skills and I was hoping to have things like that for grammar, spelling, and writing, which is what I will be teaching. I did an internet and so far no luck.I will keep searching though.

The old standards like scrabble, boggle, upwords, are good. I like to browse through the teacher catalogues for language games, though I usually can't afford to buy them. Try at www.reallygoodstuff.com and www.learningresources.com . Most of them out there seem to be for younger grades, however.

I also play 4 clues. You choose a word and they each try to guess it in the least number of clues. I say something like, "Clue One - my word has a silent e in it. Everyone write their first guess." They must choose something within a minute. Then I give succeeding clues each of which is more specific than the last. The kids can't change their answers once written. At the end they all stand and I say "State your guess in number 4.... Everyone who had the word ____ for number 4 remain standing. If you had it for number 3 remain standing...." Whoever got it in the least number of clues is the winner. It is great because you can design clues to practice a wide range of skills - parts of speech, vocab, phonics. I even throw in some math with clues like, 2/5 of the letters in my word.

There is a good game for spicing up vocabulary, called Dictionary Dabble. Just a warning though...you probably won't recognise most of the words!

interested in your idea

This is a great idea; I'm working on a book for teachers and would like to quote this; please email me through the boards. I tried to send you a private message, but it said your email was full.

bcgroup - I'm not quite clear. Did you mean to PM me? I'll go clear out my messages just in case.

language arts--7th grade
Here are some of the ones in my room . . .

Scattergories, Mad Gab, Scrabble, Upwords, Boggle, Taboo, and Password. I also have punctuation and parts of speech bingo sets, but the kids don't like them as much.

I also have several of the classic games like Monopoly, PayDay, Life, and the like . . . just because they like to play them.
