reading level Q's

My son is in 1st grade and I have been told he will be held back unless his reading improves. He is at a a level 10 and needs to be at a level 16, by the end of the year. My son is writing and doing math at a 1st grade level (where he should be) but his reading is lagging. He is also very well behaved and tries hard.

I guess here in North Carolina they like to hold back low readers, because when the get to 3rd grade, they will be caught up enough and test scores will look good. And it's the principal's choice if a student gets held back, not a parents.

Here's my question. What does text from a level 16 look like and what books (titles) are at a level sixteen. I need to be able to gage where he is at, and get him boosted. I don't want him held back, as I think he would be ok in 2nd. Also what activities can I do with him at home to help?

2nd Grade All-Boy Teacher
Are You My Mother? by Seuss and Just Me and My Dad by Mercer Mayer are both level 16 books. Most 2nd graders are also expected grow over the summer. At the beginning of 2nd grade they should be on a level 18. That would be books like Little Bear and Frog and Toad.

I teach first grade and that is a hard decision for the teacher and the parent to make or hear. Understand that if his reading does not pick up he will be farther and farther behind. I know that a level 10 going to second grade would have a VERY hard time keeping up with the work. It may also make him begin to hate school, which is something I know you would never want.

If a child is struggling in first grade and is just passed along, his third grade teacher will be able to tell. I taught third grade for eight years and the last two years were the first years of the no-pass, no promotion high stakes reading test. I could tell in the first six weeks who had trouble in first and second and who should have been held back. Those students suffered more trauma and stress than was necessary- they know they aren't on level and their self confidence usually pays the price. Students who come as close as possible to grade level will obviously have a much easier year. Was I concerned about test scores? Of course. Was I even more concerned that the child was behind and would likely be behind his entire educational career if I was not able to perform a miracle and get a child reading two or three grade levels higher in six months? Absolutely!

Thank you all for your considerate responses and I will take them to heart. I do not want my child held back. I think it would be worse for him, because he excells everyewhere else and I think with more practice at home he can reach those levels by the end of the summer. I just need some ideas on what I can do with him.

I think, with what you've told us, that is the best decision. Just because he's behind in one area is not reason enough to hold him back. I will post some ideas a little later if no one else does.

I have a friend in the same position...we are going to work with him over the summer...I guess the child id a couple levels behind, but the teacher is worried about fluency...the child getsthe tougher words just takes him a little longer to break it down!!!!

Is there a reading specialist at your school who could work with him (small group/one-on-one) or give you suggestions on how to help him over the summer?

The level 16 books you mention look like Level "I" to me using the Fountas and Pinell type leveling. This is the benchmark for the end of first grade in my district as well. Frog and Toad however are level K- Are your kids really expected to come into 2nd at this level? The benchmark in my district is level "L" for the END of second. How can a district expect a student to grow 2 levels over a summer? Most kids lose a little ground over the summer. I have 2nd grade STRUGGLERS right now who are still in 'K'....
