Two Michigan districts dissolved

These both appear to be very small districts compared to what I'm used to seeing around here, 2,200 in one and 432 in the other, but nevertheless what turmoil for these students to have to go to new schools. It also states all teachers will lose their jobs, possibly keeping summer school running, but that's it.

It's a terrible cycle that region is undergoing. People are out of work and moving away, so taxes are dropping, and schools aren't funded.

Buena Vista actually closed its doors in May for a few weeks! They have a corrupt Superintendent that also embezzled money from another district.
I believe I actually applied in Inkster this year...

Neither of these are surprises- they've been talking about the possibility for at least 6 months.

I checked my job chart- I did apply in Inkster. It is a pretty bad area, but I've applied to almost everything around!

There are some outside of Detroit that have combined as well...I know some man did a protest crawling from one city to the other and he didn't even have kids in the school system...

Giraffe - when I saw the article I thought of you and did wonder if you had applied to either of these districts. I'm still baffled as to how a district with 432 students can exist. We have way more students than that (almost 700) in just the elementary school I teach in.

Inkster has talked for years of combining with either Wayne/Westland &/or Garden City. Garden City is the next city north. I just read a news article & Garden City is not mentioned. Wish I would have known that at dinner when we were talking about it!

Parents have until Friday to fill out a School of Choice form at Garden City.

My son will be a Senior at Garden City & he is concerned about the possible influx of kids and in particular gangs. I don't know how many slots are open & they won't take Seniors.

So many questions and, as of yet, no answers. The ISD is meeting Thursday at 6p.m. to redraw school district lines so we shall see what happens.

How far will these students have to travel for their new placements?

That isn't known. One thought is that since district boundaries will be redrawn that a possibility is that the new district will use the current buildings. I guess that may depend on what the new district wants or needs to due. It very well could be several miles from their current school.
