Library Time
Do librarians still have the role of reading to the students during library at your school?
If not, what do you students do during their library time? (Just check out books? Does it differ by grade?)
Please include what kind of school (public, private, charter).
Thank you!

Our librarian will...
Read to the kids (short books)
Show videos
Check out books
Word searches/finds/crosswords
Coloring pages
I WISH my librarian would teach dictionary skills, reference sources, etc.

We have 2 people that work in our library: the Technology Integration Specialist, and a library aide. The aide works with students during library time.
I'm honestly not really sure what they do for the 30 minutes they are in the library. I think she reads a story to them, but they may do other activities, too. They have a smartboard. I know they spend the last 15 minutes checking out books.
I work in a public school.

We go to the library ever two weeks to check out books. Our librarian teaches a couple of lessons a year.

Our librarian has a curriculum to teach...study skills, research, use of technology. She DOES do read alouds and is a great support to teachers in providing resource support.

I teach in a public, Title I school. My kiddos go to the library twice a week, for 45 minutes each time. Our librarian does read-alouds and, if I remember to let her know ahead of time, she tries to tie it in with whatever we are studying for science or social studies (two things we have no real time for). She also shows movies, and is beginning to show the kiddos how to do AR, although my firsties aren't allowed to check out books. They have to be 2nd graders to do that.

Public school - Our librarians in the district read a story or two and then the kids choose and check out books.
There is some disagreement from school to school about whether to have library for the pre K/preschool classes. A few of the librarians refuse to do it, saying it's too much trouble. Others have no problem with it. The kids just go in, listen to a couple of books and go back to their classrooms. They don't check out books. The main thing is to teach the expected behavior in the library and give more literature exposure.

Our librarian will read to our students and even loves it (she's actually an assistant though). In our older buildings (5-8), our librarian doesn't read to students. The students read silently instead. The librarian would do a few book talks and would plan lessons if we asked.
I'm in a public school.

I was the teacher-librarian at my school last year (in addition to my multitude of other roles). There was only enough time for me to check students' books in and out, and reshelve the books (often in my spare time, i.e. after school). I did not have time to read to the students.
