Word wall words for Kindergarten

At our last Teacher meeting it was decided to use Patrica Cunningham list of words to teach our high frequency words. It was concluded that we were missing some words because everyone used different lists. They also want us to teach more words in each grade.

I was wondering how many words do you teach a week and the year? What words do you teach?

Also, does anyone have the list of the Patrica Cunningham words for Kindergarten or know where I can get it? They told us they were on the internet, but I can't find them. I have the list for first grade but not Kindergarten.

In our public pre-k program we teach our students 36 words from January to June but we have found that they usually learn 44 or more. We only teach a few words each week. In the older grades they are limited to 5 new words per week. Our kindergarten program only teaches 20 sight words...don't ask, it's a LONG story We made our list by cross referencing the dolch list with other high frequency word lists to come up with the most common words. I start off only teaching the smaller words from our list that have a Heidi Song to go with them This way the kids are all successful and it builds their confidence.

Thank you so much mom2ohc. I do teach many of those words, but there are many on your list I don't teach that I think I am going to add. I don't think we are teaching enough words. Thanks for sharing your list.

AMEN! Our curriculum teaches one word for a week, one word for a week, and then reviews the two words for a week. BORING!

We do 5 words a week but I think it is too little for some students and too many for others.

I still do the 5 words a week but I go back and do word bags too. These are words they encounter in their reading. Since different kids have different levels, their word bags are different. I have some kids who probably have 50 words in their word bags already while others have maybe 15 or so. It depends on what I think the kid can handle. They take the word bag home. When they've mastered the word, it goes on a word ring (that stays in the bag). Then I go through it once a week with them to see what they have learned on their word ring (consistently) and go through some of the words that are still loose in their bags.

I am interested in your word bags. What kind of bags do you use? This sounds like great idea.

We must have the same curriculum...

and when it's a review week I feel like...

"Oh yeah, we need a review. we have been hitting speed records here - and they need a breather!"

During guided reading I bring out the same book and they actually SAY "Oh no! NOT AGAIN!!"

Are they going to lose these kids (mostly boys who complain) to the enjoyment of reading by going SO slow??

***

Then I think... who am *I* to question this district which has good ratings/scores. But man! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

But as I mentioned in another thread... one thing lead to another in a lesson yesterday...and they were on FIRE with the concept of word families. So I went with it.

You can't tell me that these kids aren't HUNGRY to learn how to read more and more - faster and faster.

Our curriculum does that, too! And the kids HATE review week. I supplement the curriculum word list with other words they need to know.
