Please Help!!

Hi Everyone!

I am new to this forum and I am in need of help. I am a new teacher to 8 deaf/hard of hearing students in grades 6-8. I have some curriculum guides, but I am lost. I am replacing a veteran teacher who is retiring, she didn't teach this past week, so I haven't been able to observe her style or what the students have learned so far. I need ideas for teaching math, language arts and geography. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Thank you!!

Regarding the curriculum: Are they actually all in different grades, with different curriculum needs? The easiest thing would be to go to the grade level teachers in your school and copy their curriculum in each subject.

I've worked in a DHH class, but the students were all in the same grade so they all just followed the general ed curriculum. I wonder why the school has these students grouped into a mixed grade class? Are they also having learning difficulties? Are they on alternate curriculum?

p.s. Do they all use amplifiers? Make sure you find out your school's policy on signing. Some schools don't want their DHH students to sign at all, depending upon their approach.

Where are CutnGlue and KCJO13? I think they may be able to help with this topic.

I would agree with Special-T. I think we need more information here. Unless these students also have other learning disabilities, I'm not sure why they would be in a total pull-out situation. Do you have interpreters? Signing paras?

I would think you need to start in the gen ed curriculum guide, and find out where the gen ed classes are.
