Smile 2nd grade thematic units

does anyone have any advice for planning a cross curricula unit?

What thematic units have you used for second grade that the students really enjoyed?

2nd/3rd grade split class
Space always works for me.
I also like to do a Robert Munsch author study...the kids love his books. Not really cross-curricular though.
At Christmas I like to do "Christmas Around the World" where we learn about different traditions/customs at Christmas in other countries. Lots of Geography/ Socials/ Language Arts there.

I did farming as part of my student teaching... we:

*made butter
*researched farms in the different countries they studied throughout the year
*made soil Sam (homemade chia pet)
*taked about adjectives by describing farm animals or equipment
*read lots fo farm books
*did farm-related math problems
*built farms

The kids really got in to it... 2nd grade is fun because they're able to work more independently in groups... let me know if you want more info on any of these.

second grade thematic units

I also do space. Another one is Flat Stanley because you can combine writing, reading, social studies, geography. I do a Native American unit in the fall that covers different curriculum areas. I'm trying to plan new stuff for next year, so I'll be watching these posts too!

I watched a video that showed a second grade classroom that was involved in a cross curricular unit with an "Under the Sea" theme. The teacher integrated art, literature books (the read aloud was a book about a sea turtle), creative writing about living in an ocean, and she even incorporated math into it (although I can't remember the specifics). The classroom was completely covered with learning centers and bulletin boards that were in the sea theme but still had curriculum content. It was awesome!

Fall is a great time for cross-curricular projects. Harvest theme has tons of things to do, as do Native Americans, pilgrims, exploration, Thanksgiving.
