Sorry, I don't have any lesson plans for this book but have you tried Googling it? I did a search on Yahoo for HGTTG lesson plans and several popped up. There were technology, language arts, and social studies based plans. Perhaps I'm not too helpful but it's another place to look.

I have done some searches, but the lessons I found weren't really "book" units- they related the book to other things.. and I need language arts type units.

Wow! What a fun book! I wish I'd had you for a teacher. What grade level are we looking at here?

It's been a little while since I read this book, but it seems to me that this might be confusing to some if it's not carefully done. I don't have any real unit ideas, but if you can think of plenty of ways to make sure the kids understand what's going on in the story, I think you'll have a lot of fun with it.

It might be helpful to keep a class-wide time/space sequence chart posted somewhere; or maybe some kind of tracking chart for the main characters. Are the kiddos going to read to themselves, or are you share-reading?

The problem is, it seems so cut and dry as a book that it actually makes it harder to teach. There is no vocabulary to learn, and if symbolism exists, then I am not sure what it IS..

So we could track characters..

I was thinking of doing it sort of like an independent reading thing and have the kids do some end of the book project with it, but I am not sure what...

Oooo! Are you going to let the kids choose their project as well? You could get some really imaginative work turned in on something like that! Of course, the drawback is that it's difficult to come up with a scoring guide when everybody does their own thing.

I do think you're right about part of the problem being lack of symbolism. The story is so off the wall in places that it seems like there SHOULD be some other meaning there...

Have you read the whole series? I sat and read it all as one chunk, and I would have a tough time helping you with specifics.
