New to Daily 5/CAFE ... How does it work for you? Thoughts?

Hi everyone!

I am doing a major overhaul on my classroom stations and literacy/writing program. I came across Daily 5/CAFE. Noone at my school uses it, but I think it is just what we need. Have you used it? What do you love about it? I teach second grade, so a lot of modeling will be necessary, but I have heard of it done in 2nd before, so I know it'll work.

Just wanted to get some thoughts about how it has worked for you and if you'd recommend it.

Thanks so much! :-D

I have done it with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders.
Our 5K teacher uses it and our 4K is going to try too!

Model, model, model everything over and over.

Be patient with the stamina. It does come.

It's about 4-6 weeks before they will have independence. Although I start CAFE day 1, it isn't until after those 6 weeks that you can REALLY get into individual instruction. Those first weeks, we build stamina and I get to know the kids well one on one.

This will be my fourth year and my Daily 5 book will still be attached to my hip the first 6 weeks.

Good luck! Not only will you love it, so will your kids! My own sons have been on the system too and we even do a modified verison at home in the summer!

Thank you Rabitt!! It sounds, more and more, like this is something I HAVE to implement!

Any others with advice?

Definitely give it a try! It's a great program and super easy to use, plus the kids love it! Even my 6th graders!

In the beginning, go really slowly and find room for all the anchor charts. I like to have an area in my room for each of the daily 5 stations so that the students can be near the anchor chart to review the rules before starting (once the stations are introduced). After a few weeks, I stop setting specific areas for read to self and read to someone as the students know the rules.

Thanks for the tip mopar!

Did you do Daily 5 (and all 5 stations) everyday? I work at a private school and don't have the kids as much as I would at a public school- they have a religion, a language and a special everyday so they aren't with me for at least those three periods.

I think it may still work even if I do 2-3 stations a few days a week. Thoughts?

I only do 2-3 stations a day with my students and it works well.

I do 4 rotations per day. My kiddos do the Daily 5 +1, with the addition being a computer station rotation. Not everyone does everything every day (which violates Daily 5 in a way), but everyone does some of it every day, and all of it within a week.

Sooooo happy for you. it made me a happier and more organized teacher.

When I return in January, our mini lessons are reviewing the expectations. They become even more independent.
