Help! Recommend a reading series. Please!
Our district is planning to purchase a new reading series for the coming year. We have been using the Scott Foresman Reading series from 2000. Please let me know current reading series that are GREAT. Thanks!!

We use Houghton Mifflin. If you have a long reading block(2 hours or so) then buy the phonics readers too, if not, don't bother. The same skills are covered in the guided readers, if you know how to emphasize them.
I'd also just get one copy of the workbook for each class, as a resource. I do Daily Five, and do other things for word work and comprehension.

Do companies not bring in huge sample collections for you all to consider?

Yes, but when we were looking at the different Reading series choices, it helped that some people had worked with some of them in other settings, and knew the flaws inherent in them. It helped us to make a decision a little more quickly than if we sat there and looked through all of them.

I dislike Treasures.
Loaded with seat work.
A few in our district still use it as a supplement.
We use the Daily 5 CAFE plus Comprehension to the Core.
Our students read for the fun of reading and because they wonder.
I use the Daily 5 CAFE during my literacy block and Comprehension to the Core for science, social studies, health, etc.
love, LOve, LOVE it!

We have Mcgraw-Hill plus we have a district mandated curriclum called C-scope for all subjects. Our reading series is not aline with C-scope. We have done a lot of extra work so that we can use both at the same time.
