I work about 160-170 days a year, but I work for three districts.
Even if there were a minimum number of hours required to obtain benefits, the districts would likely do their best to make sure that most subs do not get that far.
My districts hire more subs than they need, so they could pick and choose for each assignment to keep most of us under the minimum hours.
We are the lowest priority and the least respected employees in the school system.
This is because most subs are transient, They regard it as temporary work, and therefore are not motivated to change things.
When I started 12 + years ago, I did not expect to still be subbing, but here I am.
We can be treated unfairly because the districts know we are a dime a dozen, and they can get away with it with no recourse.

Special-t I guess I am not the only one then. I am curious as to how they choose who to work with. I am thinking of asking them but I might not get a reply!

I get no benifits what so ever with subbing...No heath,no sick time, no vacations. Now I may get a benifit such as being able to join in when there is teacher snacks/lunch(sometimes) brought. Like staff bringing in pot luck type stuff but as far as real benifits no. Sometimes the fact that we get a paycheck is suprising enough!lol

It's time the districts and the public in general takes subs seriously. Just think what will happen when the teachers are absent.
There will be nobody available to cover their classes upon their return.
"I guess nobody wants a worst case scenario and is just happy when there's a warm body to fill the class. Just give the subs some money to keep them happy. Not too much otherwise we will lose our money. Plus, who takes them seriously anyways? They are replaceable and nobody cares who they really are as a person."
Their way of thinking just completely irks me.
I am just glad I am more open minded and appreciative of subs' hard work than they are.

True, isn't it?
After recently deciding to bother looking to get credentialed and consider applying in private schools, now, I am thinking to pursure other options such as county jobs (in scientist positions). The main part of my decision has to do with the way the system doesn't respect subs. I don't buy the excuse that subs are transient. Most subs are those who plan to become teachers.

But will they? I am sure you have heard the phrase "You're just a sub?"

Well it's true that some teachers won't even look you in the eye, because they do not deem you worthy enough to be acknowledged. I have seen it happen! Well I won't bother acknowledging them either if that's the way they treat me.
I know I sound bitter but there are many other teachers out there who do appreciate and respect subs. Those are the ones I want to sub for.
