    Hi all,

I'm studying for my Praxis 5038 and have a print-out of the Praxis study guide with about 30 or so authors that "are representative of those may be asked to identify." Common Core recommended reading has roughly that many more listed as well.

I have my BA in English and we covered many in college. Also, I read many growing up because I liked to read and my mom had a strong library, BUT for reasons beyond my control I never went to high school.

So I am reading a lot and freaking out a little! I don't mind the reading and some are books/authors I wanted to read anyway, but the problem I'm having is knowing WHICH books by an author are normally taught in HS?

Some are obvious, but some not so much. Like I was just reading about Willa Cather and there are at least 4 viable novels and a couple short stories. I have googled "most popular works of such-and-such author taught in high school" but not turned any results. I usually go on most popular novels but some extra direction would be appreciated. Thanks

The titles that immediately come to mind:

    Night
    Of Mice and Men
    Great Gatsby
    1984
    Animal Farm
    The Scarlet Letter
    To the Lighthouse
    Uncle Tom's Cabin
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
    The Bluest Eye
    Lord of the Flies

Perhaps if you listed some authors you were unsure about, we could give you some specific titles.

In addition to these, a few other American literature books on my list would be:

The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain
    Beloved, Morrison
    Invisible Man, Ellison
    The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck
    To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee
The Sun Also Rises , Hemingway
    Slaughterhouse Five, Vonnegut
    On the Road, Kerouac
