Most of my class is totally clueless about vowels - any fun whole group activities to introduce the concept?

We sing a song in the beginning to recognize the vowels. it goes like this

I can name the vowels for you and you can name them too

    A, E, I, O, U
    A, E, I, O, U
    A, E, I, O, U

and you can name them too!

We talk about why vowels are special letters. I have them each find the vowels in their names.

You can also do the apple and bananas song which is a great vowel song.

    To the tune of B-I-N-G-O:
There are five letters that we know
and vowels are what we call them:
    A-E-I-O-U
    A-E-I-O-U
    A-E-I-O-U
And vowels are what we call them!

And of course there's "Apples and Bananas" which my kids love...
I like to Ate Ate Ate Apples and bAnAnAs.
I like to Ete Ete Ete Epples and bEnEnEs.
I like to Ite Ite Ite Ipples and bInInIs.
I like to Ote Ote Ote Opples and bOnOnOs.
I like to Ute Ute Ute Upples and bUnUnUs.

And for short vowels, we do: (to the tune of "Farmer in the Dell")
    The short a is lamb, the short a is in lamb - /a/ /a/ /a/ /a/ /a/ /a/, the short a is in lamb.
The short e is in hen, the short e is in hen - /e/ /e/ /e/ /e/ /e/ /e/, the short e is in hen.
The short i is in pig, the short i is in pig - /i/ /i/ /i/ /i/ /i/ /i/, the short i is in pig.
The short o is in fox, the short o is in fox - /o/ /o/ /o/ /o/ /o/ /o/, the short o is in fox.
The short u is in bug, the short u is in bug - /u/ /u/ /u/ /u/ /u/ /u/, the short u is in bug.

    Hope this helps!

    Dr. Jean has one.

    Give me a long a - AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
    Give me a short a - a a
Give me a long e -EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
    Give me a short e - e e
YOu get the idea. There are more words stuck in the 2nd time you do it, but we don't do that part.

I also do for short sounds, her version of Who let the letters out (to the tune of Who let the dogs out).
    Who let the a out? a a a a
    Who let the e out? e e e e
    etc.

I'm not a teacher (yet), but I STILL remember the poem I was taught in Kindergarten to learn my vowels. My teacher had a huge, laminated house on the wall and all the vowels were peaking out from windows and doors, or standing outside the house. The poem was written on the roof. Sad that I remember that much, I guess it really sunk in!!

The house of vowels stands tall and proud,
    Reminding me and you
    That five important letters
Can mean a lot to you
They are in almost every word
    We say or listen to
And those five vowels, in the house of vowels
    Are A, E, I, O, U

Hope that helps because, like I said, I still remember it with a lot of detail.

    Old McDonald had some vowels,
    A E I O U
And the first little vowel was the letter A
Let's see what it can do
    With an A A here
    and an "ah" "ah" there
Here an A, there an "ah"
    Everywhere an A, "ah"
    Old McDonald had some vowels
    A E I O U

Then you just change to second, third, etc.

    The Vowel Song

I am currently in school for my teaching certificate at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. I cam up with this song for one of my classes.

sing to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It"

    A-E-I-O-U and sometimes Y
    *CLAP, CLAP*
    A-E-I-O-U and sometimes Y
    *CLAP, CLAP*
A-E-I-O-U are the vowels that we use
And only sometimes do we use Y
    *CLAP, CLAP *
