I am a substitute teacher. Last time I worked in High School. The students were in process of testing (6weeks test), when one of them approached me and reported that two boys on the back are cheating - switching papers.
What would be a good way of handling situation if there is no seating chart and one boy obviously gave me a wrong name (not on roster and not among tests turned in). He also looked like he is from Middle East and spoke with accent, but he claimed he is Martinez. The boy got defensive and said, "This is not a court for you to question validity of my name".
I realize that the best way was to make an actual seating chart in the beginning of the class by asking students to sign their names. However, this time I did not do it.
What would be the second best way to handle such situation of suspected cheating and wrong name provided?
    Thank you!

The best thing you can do at this point is to let the teacher know what happened.

I'd write it down and let the teacher deal with it. You're a sub, yo, don't stress yourself out! That's what I love about subbing... I don't have to deal with any of that mess. lol

I would simply report what was shared, give a physical description that included what they were wearing, where they were sitting, and the name of the person (student) who reported the fact. If I could separate out the two papers in question when they were turned in, I would add that to everything else in my report. Regular teachers see students in the same wardrobe all year. You would be surprised at how quick I would be able to identify most of my students if given the information above.

I would have called in another teacher or administrator to ID the boys. This is one of the many reasons why I do not leave tests on sub days.

If it was a normal day, I would leave a note with the teacher describing what happened and what the boy in question looked like. I definitely would not tell the child that I was questioning his name because of how he looks or his accent. Since this is a test, I would ask for another teacher or admin to come and help.
