So- I had planned to read the Kissing Hand the first day- had a cute little poem for afterwards and was going to have the kids handprints on the poem as a keepsake for the parents. Just found out that our first grade teachers are doing the Kissing Hand the first day. :( any ideas of a different read aloud WITH a cute keepsake project? I'm so bummed- I really wanted to do my idea!!

I think I would go ahead and do it too. Are the First Grade teachers doing the same project? I don't think it hurts them to hear the same story each year. I read the Kissing Hand today and many had already heard it in Preschool, but they still enjoyed it.

No- the first grade teachers are not doing the same project. I had thought about doing it- because you are right- it doesn't hurt them to hear the same story... i am new to the building (not to teaching though) and don't want the 1st grade teachers to think i'm "copying" from them- i'm kicking myself for not speaking up and telling them i had the idea to read the same book when they shared with me what they were doing...

It seems strange to me to do The Kissing Hand in first grade...at that point, they have already been away from home, so I think it loses some of it's value...it's still a great story, but somehow it's just not the same.
Anyways, you could always do Miss Bindergarten or Chicka Chicka the first day- if you google either with the word "lesson" you will find tons of stuff!! Good luck :)

I agree-The Kissing Hand is definitely a preschool or kindergarten book when they are just beginning school and being away from their parents.

The kissing Hand is a kindergarten book not a first grade book. It is for saying good bye to your parents for the first time. I vote for you to do it anyway.

One 1st grade teacher was doing it until her partner told her that we do it in K so she stopped. :)

    thanks for the input :)

I think I'll approach one of the 1st grade teachers and tell her I'd been thinking about reading it as well and doing a different activity and just make sure they don't mind... I don't want to step on any toes with being the "new" one...

I would do it anyway without worrying about "copying" them. Lots of teachers, more specifically K teachers, use that book the first day or week. I'll bet that when the 1st grade teachers read it, their students will say, "we read that last year."

see, me, I would probably do a different book, just because there a like a million books that you can read, so it just seems easier. At my school the Pre- K teacher reads that book so I would just not.

I think it is definitely a pre-k/k book, I find it strange that the 1st graders are reading it when they are already "used to" school....

I'd love to see the poem as well....:)

I teach 1st grade and stopped doing it once we saw that Kinder did the same thing. It is definitely more of a Kinder 1st of the year activity.

We still read the book as we talk about revisiting books is like revisiting old friends and we make connections with the story. But we don't do the handprint keepsake anymore.

Sorry it's taken me so long to post the poem- we have K orientation tomorrow so the craziness is setting in!

    The Kissing Hand

It's my first day of Kindergarten
    And I'm thinking of you.
    I made these precious handprints
So you will think of me, too.

It's my first day of school
And "The Kissing Hand" is what we read.
    It's about a raccoon
Who did just as his parents said.

Like the raccoon's first day at school
I was scared and a little shy.
But because of what you said
I was brave and I got by.

    All through the year
I'll make more things for you.
So as I change and as I learn
You can witness my growth, too!

Our Kind. does a bear theme. They place bears all over the building with little clues to the next location. The kids go on a "Bear Hunt" on the 2nd day. That helps them get familiar with the building and people like the librarian, secretary, principal...
