I use mneumonics whenever I can to help my kids remember! I heard a unique story to help kids remember the 13 colonies and can't find it anywhere!!

Here are some common ones that I use:
HOMES = Huron,Ontario,Michigan,Erie,Superior (The Great Lakes)
Every good boy does fine = lines on music e,g,b,d,f
    FACE = spaces in music
I have may others I'd be happy to share! :)

Found it! It's a grocery list. First you sart with This Old Man and list all the items the old man plays on.
    1-bun
    2-shoe
    3-tree
    4-door
    5-hive
    6-sticks
    7-heaven
    8-gate
    9-line
    10-hen
Next you have them associate the grocery list with those words. Have them make mental pictures in no particular order. We memorized the list as a fun game before we found out it was the 13 colonies. They don't realize they're learning.
    bun-milk
    shoe-pantyhose
    tree-tbone steak
    door-orange
    hive-shampoo
    sticks-bacon
    heaven-bread
    gate-donuts
    line-pickles
    hen-peanut butter
Do you know which state goes with which?

King Philip Came Over For Good *** (kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species) - though for school use one probably wants to reference "good SPAGHETTI" instead.

Mommaruthie's mnemonic for order of operations is a variant I hadn't heard: the one I know is PEMDAS, or Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally (parentheses, exponents, multiplication/division, addition/subtraction).

The asterisked element in my mnemonic is, of course, s e x: it should read "King Philip Came Over For Good S e x."

In general, the sillier the mnemonic, the more effective.
