I once learned a group of rhymes to teach children how to learn to write their numbers. The one I can remember is, "Around a tree, around a tree, that's the way you make a three." I am trying to find the rest of the rhymes for the other numbers. I think there may have even been some for letters too. Does anyone know these?

    Thanks for your help!

My son learned these in 1st grade and I saved them to use myself. Hope they are what you wanted! The only one I am not crazy about is 10.

1 A straight line down is lots of fun, thats because it's number one

2 Around and back on a railroad track. TWO! TWO!

3 Around a tree and around a tree, that's the way to make a three

4 Down and over and down some more, that's the way we make a four

5 Over and down and then go around, A fat old five is what you've found

6 Six is found by going down and around

7 Across the sky and down from heaven that's the way to make a seven

8 We make a snake but do not wait to climb back up and make an eight

9 A loop and a line and that is nine

10 A straight line down, its fun, its one, but with a zero beside it makes ten more fun

THANK YOU for the rhymes!!! They are quite cute and catchy, so I think that really helps the kids learn. Thank you for taking the time to type them out for me!!:)

I do most of the same rhymes as mrs27, with these differences:

Straight line down and then you're done. That's the way to make a one.

Straight line down, then around. Hat on top and five's a clown.

A stick and a hoop do the tricks. That's the way to make a six.

Make an S. Don't be late. Back to the top and that's an eight.

Dr. Jean has a numeral song on her Sing to Learn CD. Although it has different rhymes for making the numerals, it is similar. My class likes to sing it while making the numerals in the air!

I am going to look for the cd too! Anytime I can find a cd instead of singing it I am happy---lucky for me 3's and 4's don't seem to notice my horrible singing voice :)

    Number Rhymes

I don't know about letters but here are the number rhymes

    0
Round and round just like an "O"
Now you’ve made the number zero

    1
Start at the top and down you run
That’s the way you make a one

    2
Make a candy cane and give it a shoe
That’s the way you make a two

    3
Around and around just like a "B"
That’s the way you make a three

Around a tree and around a tree
That is how you make a three
(Right handers can put pointer finger of left hand down on paper and then make the two bumps touching their finger - this prevents students from making the 3 backwards!)

    4
Down and over and down some more
That’s the way you make a four
Down and across and slice through the door
That is how you make a four

    5
    Short neck, belly fat
    Mr. Five wears a hat

    6
Make a "C" then in you go
Now you’ve made a six you know

    7
Across the sky and down from heaven
That’s the way you make a seven

    8
Make an "S" and then don’t wait
Go back up and make an eight

    9
Make a circle then a line
That’s the way you make a nine

This is the only one I remember for teaching Kinder...

Across and down, with a big, fat tummy,
The number 5 looks so funny!

The kids always got a kick out of this one
