Do you need a Master's degree to teach pre-AP and AP English?

An interested principal just contacted me and I need this answer ASAP.

    Thanks so much.

As I understand it, there are no special requirements for teaching AP or pre-AP other than attending an AP conference.

    Principal
Have you submitted an application yet? Please do, and are you interested in the position tied to coaching or the advanced Englishes?

    Thanks,
    Principal

    My Response
I'm interested in both, with a preference towards the advanced Englishes.

I submitted a complete application via fax last week. I hadn't heard anything back, so I contacted you to let you know my interest about the position.

My wife and I are very interested in the BLAH community and school system.

If you found it appropriate, I would love to schedule a trip to BLAH to discuss my prospects for teaching at BLAH ISD further.

    Sincerely,
    Me

    Is this good?

Not sure I like the wording on "If you found it appropriate..." but that's just my opinion.

I haven't sent it yet. I'll probably change it.

    Here's what I went with:

"If you deem it appropriate, I would love the opportunity to travel to BLAH to discuss my prospects for teaching at BLAH ISD further."

I'm trying to get an interview, but no push myself on them at the same time.

I'm thinking in most school districts you either need to have a GT certification or have so many GT hours. What area are you looking in?

    Central Texas.

How do I get GT certification or get X number of GT hours?

I would think it depends on the district or state. In my district you have to have a Gifted certification to teach AP or have any gifted students in your classroom.

The GT certification you just take the certification test and pay the money once you pass like any other certification test. Some districts offer GT classes/seminiars to give you hours towards GT training.

Really? In my district it's 12 grad credit hours. I'm in the process right now....I would have much rather taken a Praxis!

I was shocked too that's that all it took. It'll probably be something I do over this summer.

Well everyone, I definitely didn't say anything wrong in my response, because I just got an email back from the principal.

Still no interview yet, but I'm working on it. :)

Thanks everyone; I'll definitely keep you posted.

The principal never got back with me after the last email, so ... we'll see.
