I took the Praxis 5038 test today. The screen flashed a raw score of 157. There were 130 questions on it. I'm worried if I passed the test.

If 5038's questions were all straight-ahead multiple choice questions (the A, B, C, D kind), each one counts for one raw point, so the maximum raw score would be 130 or less. (Probably less: most multiple-choice teacher tests include questions that aren't scored.) If 5038 includes other question types that allow for more than one response - Praxis has a new drag-and-drop question type and a matching type on which each correct click or drop is worth a point by itself - then it's possible that the maximum raw score is higher than 157.

I suspect that your 157 is an unofficial scaled score.

Hugs, z33jay. Your official score report will (probably: I *think* Praxis still does this on most tests) break your performance down by domains or broad areas that are tested, and that will give you some guidance as to where you came up short. You can also ask here for suggestions.

Yes, they still show how you did on each sub section which is helpful for identifying weak areas to improve.

I re-took the Praxis 5038 test today and it showed NS. I am getting worried now. Has anyone experienced this before?

Don't worry. It's probably a newer version. Did you get your raw score numbers?

I got a total raw score of 92, which ended up being out of 110 questions. That was a 190 scaled score.
If my math is right, you got 85 as a raw score. The question becomes out of how many? If it's out of the same 110, you are probably around 170-175 (just a guess based on other scores I have seen). If they take out fewer questions or more questions, your score could vary accordingly. Also, we don't know how difficult your version was compared to mine, if you had a harder version, those 85 points could equal a higher scaled score.
Luckily you took it at the end of the testing window so you should know in 10 business days. Hang in there!

Yeah, I had a raw score of 87 and got a 179 score. Raws were 31, 22 and 34, and it was 110 questions. The test had around 130 questions, and quite a few on ELL strategies, which strangely didn't show up in any of the study material I came across when looking.

Other strategies were emphasized in classes that they'd show up on the praxis, but not really any focus on ELL. Considering my education program matches up the 1/2 semester class with Junior Field, they might want to start moving this class to an earlier point in the program. And of course Elmer's resources were a big help.

Thank God it's over :) for now

I used a AP lit study guide and an 11th grade English anthology to study. They both had lots of good texts in them. I made my own study guide of terms and studied that addition.
It's a very doable test if you prepare or if you have a background in literature. I didn't have the background, so I studied.

A good place to start would be the glossaries attached to our thread "Elmer's English resources, revived." Use them in conjunction with the Internet and other resources such as an AP literature study guide.

For the passages and authors/book titles you might need to know, look up sparknotes literature 101. You don't need to buy the book, but there's a site that lists every book, title and author in there, so it's a good thing reference point if you know the main characters. Make sure you look up important authors for the various periods in literature and along with the Elmer's and google, you should be good to go.

Each version of the exam is different. There is no magic number we can tell you. If you get a difficult version, you may pass with fewer right. With an easier version, you may need to get more right.
Also passing scores vary by state. Most seem to be around 167, if memory serves, but you can check what the passing score for your state is on the ETS website.
