    Hi
Can anyone suggest any essay writing book or any other book with essays (the type of essays you need to write in CBEST writing section) which can help me clear essay writing. English in not my native launguage but i have been taught in English medium school back in India. Being a science student throughout Essay writing is not one of my area of specialisation.
I have seen that the examinees are given with two ruled pages to write. How long the essays should be? Is there any limitation of words or paragraphs(I amm asking becoz two pages are not big enough space for long essays).
Can u delete and rewrite any portion or sentences of essay when you are giving the computer based exam for writing section ? How long is the scratch paper given to roughly write the essay?

Welcome to A to Z, Debashri. If it's any consolation, plenty of people find basic-skills writing tests challenging - and a good many of those people are native speakers of English

Have you taken CBEST's essay section already and received an official score report? If so, in which of the writing performance characteristics do the scorers seem to think you're coming up short?

I have not given CBEST even once yet. But I have gone through CBEST - The princeton Review and tried to score myself in some free online practice tests and tests given in the book. I think I am doing pretty good in reading and Maths section.(getting 43-46 answers right without any preparation)

So I am thinking of giving exam in only these two sections sometime in January and later if I pass in those, I will take writing test separately.
I have read that many people find the writing section bit challenging . Although I have not prepared for that section...but I have read few sample essays of that section. I think it would be good if i can read more and more essays like that.So it would be great if anyone can suggest some essay book where I can read a lot of similar essays with nice vocabulary and strong and definite point of view.

I must say that... TeacherGroupie I find your suggestions extremely helpful. Thanks.

Splitting up the test sounds appropriate, Debashri.

Let me recommend improving your grasp of the English definite and indefinite articles, "a", "an", "the". Using English, www.usingenglish.com, can probably help.

Hello, my name is Barbara Suarez. I am visiting teacher from Mexico. I passed the math and reading cbest sections, however the writing part is very hard for me, I only obtain 26 points. This is an area of struggle for me and for many of the visiting teachers. Is there any trick to pass it? Who grade the essays? Are the ctc take a consideration since we are non native speakers?
Thanks. I really want to pass the cbest in order to continue working in California.

Please see TeacherGroupie’s suggestion above. Your post has several grammatical mistakes in it.

Here’s what I wrote in the Praxis Core Writing thread. It might prove useful to either of you.

“I believe the evaluators are looking for a standard 5-paragraph essay, so there is no need to be flowy with your language. Just get straight to the point. My suggestion is when you write your thesis statement that you make sure to include three examples to exemplify your main point. For example, “I believe that heterogenous group work, in certain instances, is a more effective teaching strategy than homogeneous collaborative work because it benefits the low- and medium-level performers to a greater extent, it encourages the high-level performers to help struggling group members, and it enables every student to do their best learning in the classroom as the discussions are more student driven.”

Next, each body paragraph should reference one of the examples. This makes it very easy to write an essay. Also, if you have difficulty writing your introductory paragraph, try working backward. Think of the big picture and fill in the steps on how to get there as you write. Finally, in your conclusion, paraphrase your thesis and add some last-minute thoughts to tie everything together. For example, “Mixed-group learning is more advantageous than ability grouping because all learners benefit and students peer tutor one another. The teacher can take on more of a facilitator role and the students take charge of their own learning. In homogenous groups, the teacher has to routinely check in with students, in particular, the low and medium groups, to ensure that those students are not left floundering. This can detract from the learning process as said students are not doing the investigative task on their own and have to be steered toward the correct answer.”

The trick to writing a good essay is to avoid adding fluff to a paper to make it long enough and to give the how or why to every argument. In this case, don’t just say “heterogeneous grouping is better than homogeneous grouping,” say “heterogeneous grouping is better than homogeneous grouping because blah blah blah.” This helps your thoughts flow and enables you to expand upon each thought more so than if you were to just write a closed-ended response.”
