Can anyone give me the exact language or maybe a technique I can use to correct terribly wrong pencil grips of elementary students? I'm seeing some very weird grips this year that are impacting students' abilities to write.

I feel I can work with these students and they'll be receptive to change but it's not something I know how to teach specifically.

Can you find an image of the correct way to hold a pencil? I had the same problem as a student (small motor issues), but seeing a picture of how my hand should look helped enormously.

Have you tried the rubber pencil grippers that help align fingers properly?

I have some three sided triangle shape ones but they don't really help. I've seen ones with specific places for fingers, those might work better?

Do you have an OT who can help??? They often have grips and/or techniques to assist. It really does have an impact on writing, but can be difficult to change if they have been doing it in an incorrect manner for a long time. Good luck!

Yes! Ive had luck with the ones that are especially molded for finger placement. (Stetro grip) The look like a little blob. :p Kids ‘retrain’ their grip. Good luck!

This link has a video clip of an OT explaining different grip aids:

Thanks. I'll try some of the finger placement blobs.

I'm curious, are there any early childhood teachers out there who can explain how they teach this?

We start with learning the names of fingers (thumb, pointer, tall man / middle, ring, pinky)
Then teach them to hold a short pencil (or broken-in-half pencil) or crayon with only the thumb, pointer, and tall man, which is called the tripod grip. The ring & pinky get tucked in
Handwriting Without Tears has a song that goes with it. It's pretty good.
    The kids learned really fast.
