I have a parent that has given me a hard time this year. She has a child in my class and a sibling in an older grade. She's a difficult parent, well known around the school, and my principal has had to deal with her on multiple occasions for becoming violent/aggressive with staff and other parents.

Anyways....she asked me a few weeks ago if we were going to do a preschool graduation. I explained that we would be having a family literacy night that would serve as our end of year celebration, but that the only grade that does a graduation is 5th grade. She emailed a big long response to how ridiculous that was and that each grade works hard and deserves a graduation....

She hasn't mentioned it again until today. We have 5 days left in the year and she emails me and asked me to buy a cap and gown so that all the children can have their pictures taken in it. I won't even go into my thoughts about a parent asking me to buy something, but I don't even know what to say to her at this point.... thoughts? Should I even respond?

If you have a supportive principal, I'd kick this up to him/her. Perhaps ask your principal if you should reply with something like, "I'm sorry, we're not able to do something like that. Please contact Mrs. Principal if you have any questions about this policy."

This is above your pay grade. If you buy a gown for one kid then you are obliged to do it for all the kids in the same grade. Parents asking us to buy things for their kids is unreasonable. Don't ignore the email but forward it to those with the higher pay grade who are supposed to deal with it. So if the parent rings you for a response you can say that it's not your call and you have forwarded her suggestion to the P and that's all you can do.

I would respond that due to intermittent issues with lice, it is strictly against school policy for children to share clothing.

I agree. Don't spend any time contemplating this issue...kick it up stairs and be thankful that your time with this parent is almost over!

Definitely don't ignore but yeah, that's what the forward button and the principal are for.

If you have a principal who won't shut that down, reply that your budget money for the year has been spent and you will be unable to purchase any additional items this year.

In which case the parent might send the graduation gear in. Ignore the email. You have just a few days with your prek kiddos. Send it to your P- not this weekend though. Send it Monday (and I still wouldnt send it first thing on Monday. ...Wait a bit...Maybe around lunchtime on Monday...Or dismissal time. LOL)

Thanks all! I'm just going to forward it to my P tomorrow.

On a side note, she also asked her older son's 3rd grade teacher to buy all the students trophies and have them engraved when she found out that the school was giving out certificates for awards day....:)

So she is the type that believes that everyone deserves a trophy for participating. I feel for ALL teachers that have to deal with her due to her kids.

    Wow, just wow.
I would respond similar as specialpeskoo.
With future kiddos, keep all responses short and sweet. All meetings scheduled and with another person around.
