not getting middle school interviews, only highschool...

    Hello,
    I have a 4-8 ELAR, 7-12 ELAR, AND SPED
    I am currently ending my 1st year of teaching at a private middle school, and I am applying elsewhere.
    I would rather teach middle school because I have experience there but I would be open to high school too, so I am applying to both.
    I seem to only be getting interviews to high school (well only 3 so far) and none for middle schools.
    Do middle schools see my certs and reject me because I don't have a generalist?

    It is possible that the middle schools are looking at you and thinking: "Great certs. Just wish she had a generalist or two." Or, it could be that the middle schools aren't really looking at the moment, will be doing interviews a bit later, etc. There could be a million reasons. I'm certified in Secondary (6-12) English and a lot of my interviews (8 out of 13 over the last year) have been for middle schools.

    Three of our six ELA teachers are 7-12 English certified only.

    I think you need the 4-8 generalist as well.

    Of course, this will vary depending on where you live, too.

    Here your options are K-4 all subjects, 5-9 two subjects, 7-12 one subject, or k-12 special education or specialty areas like music, art, PE, etc. When I got my degree it was either K-8 all subjects or 7-12 one subject.

    Just curious - what are the specs on the SPED certification? Is it only valid when teaching the content certifications you have in ELAR?

    In elementary, at least, you have to have your SPED cert and EC-6 Generalist. I imagine it looks a little different in the upper grades, though.
