I ran across a quote by Thomas Carruthers which defines teaching as follows:

"A teacher is one that makes himself progressively unnecessary".

    Oh man I love it.

I've been lucky enough to have a few students who've flourished at the subject I teach. The best feeling in the world is to know I'm now useless to them!

Hope that inspires some of you guys - keep going and feel free to share your own fav quote!

    Love that!

    I have a few:
"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."--Confucius
"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all."--Aristotle
"Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think."--Albert Einstein

Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.

Our ELL Department Head used to say she was ''always trying to work herself out of a job,'' I always thought that was interesting.

    I love it!

I guess the better we are, the less point to us there is!

A professor of mine said almost every day, "We teach by creating environments."

Another professor, we called him Uncle Al, used to say, "How do you know? And how do you know you know? And how do you know you know you know you know--you know?" (A good point to remember when I'm evaluating or diagnosing students).

I don't have a favourite quote but it's kind of a saying. "If you teach a kid to fish, he can feed himself forever" - something along those lines.

Something else that makes me smile is when I mark test papers or assessments and my students write in the words I speak. When I read what they are writing, it's like hearing myself speak. I know that what I have said has stuck or has resonated with them and they remember!
