I had my training back in Feb. but I don't know if I would call it a real "training." They gave us the materials, showed us the first book, told us to read it throughly, and then showed us the resources on the CD Rom it comes with. I did read through the first book and did the first couple of lessons with my students. I really liked it, but it will be difficult to get used to the lesson format. It's not the way most teacher's manuals are laid out. We didn't have to implement the lessons until the '06-'07 school year so I'll have more experience teaching it next fall.

    Please.

I would love to have your plan for K. We are looking at the plan for primary and this would help.

UOS is awesome. It is intended for children in grades k-2. I am doing staff development with Leah Mermelstein who co-wrote some of the units with Lucy Calkins. Some of the lessons are too simple for second grade so I have skipped them but they would be absolutely perfect with K- You have to tailor it to your children's abilities. It is a great program though and if you use it you will LOVE it!

I also just began using the Lucy Calkins series. I teach 1st grade and have found the series to be just right my students. I really believe in the idea of not teaching basic sentence structure FIRST. For those of you who aren't familiar, Lucy really stresses to let the kids get writing first, and worry about the editing later. She does touch on simple editing at the end of the first month, but nothing like what I've seen before. We have 30-45 minutes of writing each day (including our mini lesson) and my students don't want to stop writing. I think this workshop really gives students the chance to write about what they love...and not worry about if it's spelled right or if "looks good". I love it and so do my students!

It's fantastic! Geared toward first grade but I taught it in second and kindergarten as well. It's best when you use it as a foundation and apply six traits to it. You will know which trait to add to the mini lesson based on what you see that the children are doing.

I teach Pre-K and love the Units of Study. The children have progressed as much in the last month as my class did in the entire year with just "journaling". I am still in the first month and have slowed it down to gear toward Pre-K. Many of my students are writing phonetically. All of them are writing representationally. They all love the program. They love reading their stories to the class. Each progresses at his/her own pace, and each is working at his/her maximum potential. I want everyone to be happy with their work and this program allows for this. I am still a "beginner" at conferring. I have to read and re-read the book, but am also getting better. I love this program :woot: Maybe I will change my mind as I progress through the curriculum, but now it is great!!!

My K group is piloting it for the district this year, it will be mandatory next year for all of kindergarten. We are finding that we need to go back and forth a lot with it but overall I like it a lot. We just finished book 2 of four and are going back to book one for a bit and the highlights of book two before moving to book 3

Please let me know how I can get a copy. I am teaching K this year for the first time. I bought the series of books, but would like to see what you have put together for K specifically. Thanks!
