Does anyone have a good song/chant they do when lining up for the hallway? Also, I am looking for a short poem to use for the first day/week of school? I hope everyone is not as overwhelmed as I am right now!!!!!

I always do the one that goes:

I'm giving myself a great big hug,
    I'm standing straight and tall.
My eyes are right in front of me,
    I'm ready for the hall!

The kids seem to love it. I'm also overwhelmed! Our open house is tomorrow night, and I am just now beginning to work on the packets that I will give out to parents...yikes! Looks like I'll be up for a while.

One thing we do is say: "hips and lips" and then we put one finger on our lips and our other hand on our hips, as we walk quietly down the hall. Actually the kiddos look so cute walking down the hall. They take such pride in doing "hips and lips" well as a whole class.

    I also say:
"My hands are hanging by my sides, I'm standing very tall, My eyes are looking straight ahead, I'm ready for the hall."
I've seen many different versions of this poem.

I used a variation on both of these in my student teaching last year!

for the lips/hips one we would say "hand on the hips and finger on the lips". and the other one was

my hands are by my sides, I'm standing straight and tall, I will not talk at all, I'm ready for the hall."

My fvorite and the kids' is the Line Up Cadence from Dr. Jean. Now, I have to admit that I don't like her song version of it so I just chant it with a gruff military-style voice. The kids LOVE it and always stop messing around and chant with me. I work in a military community and most of my students have mommy's and daddy's in the service so they love being soldiers.

    (Chant “Cadence Style”)

Lining up is easy to do. (Children repeat)
When you take care of only you. (Children repeat)
Feet together, hands by your side. (Children repeat)
We’ve got spirit, we’ve got pride! (Children repeat)
    Sound off! (Children repeat)
    1, 2. (Children repeat)
    3, 4. (Children repeat)
Bring it on down. (Children repeat)
    1, 2, 3, 4. (Children repeat)
    Out the door! (Children repeat)

For my Pre-K student teaching I used a song that went like this:

All aboard the (Name of line leader)train
    The _______ train
    The _______ train
    All aboard the _______ train
it's time to go to _______ (art, gym, recess, etc.)

I also saw a 4K teacher who sticks her arm straight out in front of her and the children are supposed to line up directly under her arm. To make it fun and get their attention she'll move her arm from side to side or up (jumping), and they have to follow it.

I use a variation of the hall songs posted above....

My hands are tight behind my back. (We are the busy bees so we put our bees <thumbs> in our hives <other hand>.)
    I'm standing straight and tall.
My eyes are on my teacher.
    I'm ready for the hall!

I like the train and the military style cadence...I would have to write it down because I would never remember that!
I have never tried it before, but I heard that a kinder. teacher in my district would walk in front of her line holding up a green circle. The other side of the circle was red. If someone was out of line or talking, she would walk over to them showing the red side, and they stopped their behavior immediately! I think it sounds a little harsh, but it worked!
