Hey everyone. I was just offered a second grade position and I am really excited. This is my first teaching job and I did my student teaching in kindergarten. I want to start gathering some supplies for this new grade level because all I have right now are kindergarten level books, etc. What are any must-haves you can think of for second grade? Thanks!

Congratulations! Second grade is the best. As far as books go, I second mopar and would add, Junie B., Berenstain Bears, Froggy, and simple nonfiction. I would also pull out my science and social studies standards for the year to see what extra materials you might need for labs and projects. Here in Texas, we always need magnets, rocks, and plant stuff, but I'm not sure what the standards are like where you are.

Definitely get Junie B. Jones books, Amber Brown, Ramona and Beezus books, Magic Tree House, Magic School Bus, Bailey School Kids, Henry & Mudge - just to name a few. I just started in 2nd grade two weeks ago and my classroom library is a bit lacking compared to my colleagues....

Congrats on your new job! Check with your local library to see if they have any special days for teachers. A city near me always has a friends of the library sale twice a year and one day from each week is set aside for teachers. You go in and can get as many free books as you want. The only thing you have to do is haul them away in boxes.

    Congratulations!

The only series I can think of that I didn't see mentioned is Horrible Harry.
