I'm really confused about how to decorate my room. I don't want it to be too cutesy because 4th graders are starting to mature. I just don't know what is age appropriate and what isn't. The 4th and 5th grade teachers from the previous school I taught at had empty walls and I don't want an empty classroom. Of course I will have student work up.

    Thanks!

Student work, word wall, inspirational posters, concept posters (writing traits, math facts, science/social studies posters), calendar.

What type of calender? Like the primary calenders that we would use in the younger grades? Thanks!

You could use that and just put it up, changing it monthly. That's what I plan on using on one of my bulletin boards.

    ok, thanks.

    This is what I'm thinking:
    -primary calender
    -conflict resolution/character building posters
-visuals to walk students through emotions
    -motivational posters
-posters related to current content being studied
    -100 book challenge
    -student work

I have a huge room. The school is in an old victorian building.

I have a themed classroom- Jasztalville, and I have a whole bunch of United States resources in my classroom- postcards and even a wooden Jasztalville sign I created. The kids have really enjoyed it for the past few years- I developed the theme in my third year of teaching, and now I am entering my sixth year. I also print my students' pictures- with them standing with unique backgrounds like the White House and the Eiffel Tower, on magazines, and in inspirational posters made with bighugelabs.com. The room is colorful, and the kids feel comfortable in there.

I had a developmental board, a math board, an informational board, a reading comprehension board, some posters about reading, and a calendar. I had a detective theme so all my butcher paper was black with bright accent colors for the letters.
The rest of the of stuff on the walls were charts we developed together in class. These changed as students mastered skills, different writing genres were taught, etc.
